Editorial Reviews

Stephanie Zvirin
Although Kroll's story is really little more than a thinly fictionalized lesson about the brutal effects of schizophrenia, it is a simply written, surprisingly touching portrait. Its focus is 10-year-old Rachael, who recalls her once loving relationship with her older sister, Karen, and then its gradual deterioration as Karen's behavior becomes increasing problematic. Kroll does not shirk from the unpleasant--there' reference to delusions ("a make-believe world") and to Karen's inappropriately childish ways--but neither does she sensationalize or mislead. The charming cover in pretty pastel colors is a slightly different matter. It is much different from the ink-and-wash art inside, which, though harsh and sometimes amateurish, effectively depicts Rachael's confused feelings about Karen, who is shown as alternately frightening, vulnerable, and totally detached. Kroll speaks to the value of securing professional help by including a therapist as a character in the story, and while ending the book on a positive note, makes it clear that Rachael understands the magnitude of her sister's illness and realizes that the problems it creates for the family may be insoluable. Rachael's concluding declaration is realistic in its offer of hope without promises: "I'll try to keep loving her." A sensitive depiction of a child's coming to terms with a heart-wrenching family problem, this is a book parents and children will need to share.
