    Sublimely helpful

I've been working as a freelance writer for about 6 months full time, and Goodman's book could not have come at a better time. If nothing else, hearing another freelance writer describe her experiences helped motivate me to continue. But Goodman's book did not stop there. I really feel her pages taught me how to set a monetary value on my services, how to stick up for myself with an annoying client, and how to generally view my work as a business, which it of course is. So many of us writers tend to think of our work as beautiful and creative and sort of sneer at the business-y stuff associated with it. Goodman's work teaches you how to view the business of writing as just that (and to do it logically and successfully) while still maintaining the integrity and art of your product. I love this book. I consult it at least once daily.

Great for those just starting out

If you don't mind a casual writing style and you're truly just beginning your freelance career, this book is a worthwhile resource for you to check out. Her list of other resources is especially helpful.

On the other hand, if you've already been freelancing (even if only on the side), you've probably already figured out much of what Goodman has to say. There will certainly be tidbits here and there to help you out, especially in regard to resources about taxes and such, but you're most likely not going to sit down and read the book cover to cover with a highlighter.
