I had to force myself to finish this stupid book. The author spends most of the book bragging about herself and her accomplishments. Fantastic. You're a writer and everyone loves you...no one cares. I was so disappointed. Her so called "experiment" with being a Proverbs 31 wife never really happened and really all she does is talk about how bad she feels about being a working mom. Waaa. If you want to read a book about how fantastic Sara is with her career then read this one. Lame.

I have always had a love hate relationship with Psalms 31. I always said I make a better girlfriend than wife because of this chapter. The expectation to me is unrealistic it would take multiple wives to live up to standard. Sara like me gets the sickening feeling everytime a sermon is preached about. Unlike me who would just roll my eyes and turn to my favorite book in the bible and read ignoring the sermon, Sara listens and attemps to become more like the Psalms 31 wife. It was great to read the honest struggle of this miltary wife to do and be all things. My favorite part is at the end when she realizes that here husband and son loves her even in her imperfection. And I hope one day my family can say she did the best she could.

This book is a memoir of one year in the life of Sara Horn. Sara set out to complete a one-year experiment to live as the Proverbs 31 Wife. I think she did it. The Proverbs 31 Wife has long been touted from pulpits as the woman Believers should aspired to emulate. I have been one of those women who wanted to be like her, but have so often failed. I am a homeschool mom, with many dreams for my children and myself. I have time during the day to think about this woman and work on putting those principles into practice. In this book, Sara brings the Proverbs 31 Wife into the 21st Century and teaches all woman, no matter what their staion, through her successes and failures how we can accomplish such a feat. I am married with children and I want to bring my husband "good and not harm all the days of his life." I want my children to "rise up and call me blessed." In My So-Called Life, Sara has brought this woman to life and shown me how I can turn those possibilities into realities. While reading this book, I found myself more aware of my relationship and actions with my husband and children. Was I doing the Proverbs 31 Wife thing to do? No, in many cases no. But I found out how to make just the slightest, smallest change, and it was easily accomplished! I recommend this book to any woman who has struggled to become more like the Proverbs 31 Wife. As you read about Sara's experience you will learn how your effort no matter how small can do great things and you will be transformed. I must include this thought as part of my book review. Aside from helping me learn how to put Biblical wisdom in practice, this book also gave me another thought. The Proverbs 31 wife is NOT the only woman in the Bible. There are many honorable women in the Bible: Deborah, Ruth, Mary the mother of Jesus, Abigail, Sarah, Lydia, and on and on. They didn't all live like the Proverbs 31 woman. Every woman has her purpose and place, which is something else you will become aware of as you read this book. On one final note, I would like to say that Sara saves the most important lesson for last. If you are familiar with the Proverbs 31 Wife, you will know how it ends. My So-Called Life as a Proverbs 31 Wife by Sara Horn offers hope to every woman who has ever felt intimidated by that paragon of female virtue. Horn, the wife of a of a Navy Reservist, is a free-lance writer who has always taken pride in her work, which leaves her at odds with the Martha Stewart of the Bible in Proverbs 31 who cooks the meals, sews the clothes, keeps the house clean, harvests crops, sells property, makes money, and has her husband bragging up her at the city gate while her children call her blessed. Horn is not the traditional Christian woman who stays at home, is a genius in the kitchen, and homeschools her children, and proudly so! So her quest to try and live up to this example seems almost humorous, but Horn is sincere in her desire to be a better wife and mother by embracing Martha 31, as she nicknames the unnamed woman. But Horn's husband Cliff is a better cook than she is, leaving her often discontented by his enjoyment of cooking for the family, she never manages to sew anything, and the family's circumstances change radically when Cliff can't find a job, forcing Horn to take a job at a college in North Carolina and uprooting the entire family. But what Horn, and readers, learn that it isn't about whether she can master all of Martha 31's talents, it's about whether Horn is using her God-given talents to the best of her ability to bless her husband and child. This is a vital lesson for women like me who have often felt a failure compared to Martha 31 and her seeming perfection. Horn is an engaging writer, keeping the reader entertained whether her plans are wildly successfully or crashing beyond belief. She offers hope for those of us who will never be Martha Stewart or Martha 31 that God loves us just as we are .

I was disappointed that she never truly completed the experiment. I could relate to her frustration about being the Proverbs 31 wife today while so many mothers have to work, but in the end she quit her job. I felt like the book was unresolved. It did, however, make me look at the way I use my time and contemplate which changes I could make to be a better wife to my husband... but I think something along the lines of the Love Dare or the Resolution for Women would be better if you're looking to make a change for your marriage/family. If you're looking for a real experiment (as I was, even if it failed horribly), this is NOT what you're looking for.

I loved this book. I loved the honesty and humor. It definitely challenged me to think about the Proverbs 31 wife differently and made me think about how I can apply those principals to my life.

Sara does a wonderful job approaching the task set forth in Proverbs 31 which has always been daunting to the modern woman and I suppose the woman of Bible times. It does a great job to elevate the tasks of being a homemaker, a mom and a wife when done with heart, and appreciates those women who have careers to help the family financially. It offers great perspective for moms staying at home to respect those women out in the career world and also offers respect to those women who remain at home to be the best homemaker they possibly can be. Great read for any wife or mother!

This book, written casually and like a memoir of sorts, is a must read for the woman who strives to be a better wife and mother. It hit home for me as I am in grad school and battling with the idea of starting a family, and understanding my role in life. Some parts were slower, but others touched my heart. I highly recommend this book.

I didn't care for this book at all. I got through it but it was a chore.
Just like all other books of this type, it ends up saying that you have to work from home or not work to really be able to focus on your family.

You mean I'm not the only one that isn't the perfect Proverbs 31 wife? This book was such a refreshing take on Proverbs 31. Like the author, most times I read that notorious chapter I end up feeling like I should just beat my head against a wall because there is no way I will ever stack up. Most days it's all I can do to just keep my head above water and I'm not making any progress at all. Reading Sara's experiences with trying to be the perfect Proverbs 31 wife was so freeing for me. It made me realize that I don't have to be perfect, but I shouldn't just give up, I need to at least attempt and strive for better. It was convicting with out being condemning and above all it was filled with refreshing honesty!

I have really been going through a rough time this year, I have felt just like Sara when it comes to be a wife and mother. This book came at just the right time for me. The first night I read 80 pages on my nook!
I could relate and really appreciated that she shares her struggles in everyday life.
I recommend this book to anyone to is looking for a better relationship with not just your spouse but with the Lord too!
