Overview

Some people have been critical of the MTV show My Super Sweet 16, which shows the lavish birthday parties of young people from wealthy or privileged backgrounds. These critics are offended by what they perceive as the greediness and egotistical behavior of the birthday boys and girls who are planning to celebrate the party of a lifetime. And they have lambasted their parents for spending hundreds of thousands of dollars to make these parties happen. Despite this controversy, countless teenagers and even many adults tune in every week to watch My Super Sweet 16. The program has attracted some of the biggest names in the music industry. Many stars have either performed at My Super Sweet 16 parties or thrown extravagant bashes for their own teens.

This books in the MAJOR REALITY SHOWS series describes how the featured teens thrill their friends by inviting them to the lavish shindigs while angering others by leaving them out in the cold. Some participants insist on wearing only the most expensive clothes and jewelry; others receive $100,000 cars as birthday presents. The book also examines a related MTV show, Exiled, on which former sweet 16 celebrants are shipped off to remote parts of the world to learn how those in poor cultures get by and gain an appreciation for all that they have.

Editorial Reviews

Children's Literature - Naomi Butler
Even many adults have tuned in weekly to watch My Super Sweet 16's lavish birthday parties. This book describes how the featured teens thrill their friends by inviting them to extravagant bashes. The program attracted some of the biggest names in the music industry. For example, "As the son of Sean "P. Diddy" Combs, Justin is hip-hop royalty. And when your dad is Diddy you can't have just any regular old cake and ice cream birthday party. He wants to walk in with the hottest date and have the sickest performers to impress his friends. Despite having an over the top star studded party, Justin is not your typical celebrity kid, he wants to use his party for a good cause and raise money to help the relief effort in Haiti." However, not all agreed that this show offered a positive image and critics were offended by the behavior and expense of these parties. They criticized the parents for spending so much money on a fleeting event. The book also examines a related show, Exiled, on which 16 celebrants are shipped off to remote parts of the world to learn how those in poor cultures get by and gain an appreciation for all that they have. In general, lessons were learned from these trips and kids could come away with a better appreciation of other cultures and realize how "lucky" they were. The resources in the back will give more information about these shows. Reviewer: Naomi Butler
