My Taxi Ride

Written by Paul DuBois Jacobs and Jennifer Swender

Illustrated by Selina Alko

Hail taxi! Hey taxi!

Ho taxi! Yo taxi!

Where to Miss? Where to Mister?

Where to brother? Where to sister?

All around New York town!

Hail a taxi and dash off on a colorful ride through the sights and sounds of New York City! Stop on Broadway to see a play, climb the Empire State Building, or visit the zoo in Central Park "where bikers bike and doggies bark." The rhythm of this book will whisk you through the narrow streets of Greenwich Village to the wide expanses of Museum Mile. Ride right through the heart of the city. Filled with the colorful, hip illustrations of Selina Alko, My Subway Ride is must-have for children everywhere and for anyone who loves New York City or wants to visit there.

Paul DuBois Jacobs and Jennifer Swender are a husband-and-wife writing team who live in Brooklyn, New York. Paul has co-authored three books with musician Pete Seeger: Pete Seeger's Storytelling Book, Abiyoyo Returns, and Some Friends to Feed: The Story of Stone Soup. Jennifer is an early childhood educator and curriculum developer. Paul and Jennifer's favorite subway line is the Q train.

Selina Alko, a children's book and editorial illustrator, studied illustration at the School of Visual Arts in New York City. She has illustrated many educational books including Show and Tell Rose (McGraw-Hill) and Jump Rope (Bebop Books). She has also illustrated a weekly portrait column in Showbiz Magazine (Las Vegas) since 2000. Selina currently lives in Brooklyn with her husband Sean Qualls. Her only mode of transportation is the subway.

Editorial Reviews

From Barnes & Noble
Paul DuBois Jacobs, Jennifer Swedner, and Selina Alko were last seen by book-minded Gothamites as they raced through New York's underground in My Subway Ride. Now the trio is back with a sun-drenched tour of Manhattan in My Taxi Ride. This engaging book takes young readers on a tour of New York sites, including Broadway, Greenwich Village, the Empire State Building, and Central Park. A cheerful chomp of the Big Apple.
Publishers Weekly
The team behind My Subway Ride offers another infectiously rhythmic and invitingly hip love letter to a distinctly New York experience. The book actually takes readers on two wild journeys simultaneously. One is a literal ("who cares what the meter says?") taxicab trip all around the Big Apple, "From Washington Heights to Brooklyn Heights./ Climb on in and see the sights./ Moma! Soho! Noho! Dumbo!/ All around our New York town!" The other journey is more figurative, as the book initiates readers into the ways of savvy New Yorkers. They'll learn how to spot a taxi (yellow), the importance of being persistent (if a cab turns out to be off duty, "don't despair," because there are more than 12,000 in the city) and, of course, how to get one to pick you up: "Raise your arm and point your finger./ Belt it out like an opera singer:/ Hail taxi! Hey taxi!/ Ho Taxi! Yo Taxi! Whoa taxi!" Once again, Alko is totally in the groove with her co-authors; her multi-media pictures exude a vibe that's both streetwise and celebratory. To convey the city as a non-stop visual feast, she plays with framings, perspective and even gravity (one taxi drives up the side of the Empire State Building). Best of all, her portraits of New Yorkers capture the population's collective best: edgy, blithely multicultural and bighearted as all get-out. Ages 4-8. (Aug.) Children's Literature
Hop in a taxi for a wild, sometimes bewildering, and always entertaining ride through the streets of New York City. First you've got to hail a taxi so "raise your arm and point your finger, belt it out like an opera singer "Hey taxi! Ho taxi! Yo taxi! Whoa Taxi!" As there are more than 12,000 cabs cruising the city's streets, you're sure to get a ride. And, ready or not, what an adventure you'll have! Stop on Broadway to see a musical or catch a play. Wind through the narrow streets of Greenwich Village. Check out the Empire State Building and Central Park. And everywhere enjoy the crowds of people in all their wonderful diversity. When it's time to head for home, check the meter, pay the fare, and don't forget "Tip the driver. Tip your hat. Say good-bye and that is that." The rhythmic, rollicking text is highlighted by clever multimedia illustrations as colorful, confusing, and vibrant as New York City itself. A great book for kids and for any adult who loves the Big Apple.

Hail taxi! Hey taxi!

Ho taxi! Yo taxi!

Where to Miss? Where to Mister?

Where to brother? Where to sister?

All around New York town!

A bus is fine, but it sticks to a line.

That's okay if you've got the time.

A train is a treat, but it's stuck on a track.

That's a drag if you're late to get back.

A car is cool but you gotta park it.
