Overview

If you take R. Kelly's raw, gospel-rooted harmonies and add a dash of Bobby Brown's B-boy swagger, then you have Avant. This Cleveland newcomer burst onto the soul music scene in the new millennium with the hit single "Separated," a sentimental breakup song led by Avant's pained tenor. The track sets a mellow tone for the album, which marks the debut release from Magic Johnson's MJM record label. The soulful MY THOUGHTS picks up where Carl Thomas's EMOTIONAL and Joe's MY NAME IS JOE left off, as Avant croons lovelorn tales that prove that big boys do cry. His softer side shines brightest on his beautiful cover of Rene & Angela's "My First Love," featuring dazzling newcomer Ketara Wyatt, and on the soaring ballad "Why," which poignantly addresses topics such as homelessness and single motherhood and -- in the tradition of Kelly's "I Believe I Can Fly" -- features vocal accompaniment from a mass choir. Avant does get funky on the mid-tempo bass grooves of "Happy" and "Reaction," the latter borrowing a guitar riff from Isaac Hayes's "Wonderful." Avant represents a new generation of R&B balladeers -- soulful, seductive, and sensitive. Ralph Tresvant would be proud.

Editorial Reviews

All Music Guide - Alex Henderson
R. Kelly proved to be one of the most influential male R&B vocalists of the '90s, and Avant certainly doesn't escape his influence on My Thoughts -- the singer's debut album and the first album to come out on basketball icon Magic Johnson's MCA-distributed Magic Johnson Music. Like Chicago native Kelly, Avant is from the Midwest; his home town is Cleveland, and his connection to the Windy City includes his Chicago-based producer Steve "Stone" Huff and his Chicago-based manager Eric Payton, who is among this CD's executive producers. Kelly's influence, in fact, is impossible to miss on My Thoughts, a competent, if uneven, effort that Huff produced. Much of the material is routine urban contemporary fare, but on the album's best tracks, you can hear Avant's potential. Arguably the CD's best offering, "My First Love" is a remake of a Rene & Angela ballad that features female vocalist Ketara Wyatt and boasts a delicious '70s-like string arrangement by Tom-Tom 2000. Also likable is the melancholy hit "Separated," the moody "This Time," and the candid "Let's Make a Deal," an Avant/Huff composition that finds the singer declaring that a relationship cannot be one-sided. If Avant's phrasing sometimes brings to mind Ronald Isley, it's no coincidence -- the Isley Brothers are a major influence on Kelly, who is Avant's primary influence. This isn't to say that My Thoughts is in a class with the Isley Brothers' work, or even Kelly's albums. My Thoughts isn't mind-blowing, but it's decent more often than not and lets us know that Avant has potential.

This whole album is very true from my opinion. The reason I say that is because of the chorus 'WHEN WE WERE 2GETHER WE NEVER TRUNED OUR BACKS ON EACH OTHER, BUT NOW THAT WERE SEPERATED WE CAN'T STAND 1ENOTHER'.

I think that Avant is a talented, and appealing singer. He's cute, and I wish that he could one day become my baby daddy. But, he can't because I love my baby Jeremiah the best.

I'M SO THANKFUL THAT AVANT HAD THE CREATIVITY TO PRODUCE A SONG THAT'S SO INTERESTING AND HELPFUL. I'M VERY PLEASED TO HEAR A SONG THAT TOUCHES THE SOUL OF MYSELF AS WELL AS OTHERS. I WILL LOVE TO THANK AVANT FOR MAKING THIS SONG, IT REALLY TOUCHES MY HEART AND I FEEL THE EXACT SAME WAY. YET, STILL THE SONG IS VERY TRUE AND REAL TO ME. SO, AVANT WHENEVER YOUR TIME IS FREE, FEEL FREE TO WRITE ME ONLINE,OR SEND ME YOUR THOUGHTS: HA! HA! HA! GOTCHA! I'M JUST EXITED ABOUT YOUR SONG THAT'S ALL, TILL THEN KEEP UP THE GOOD WORK OK? PEACE,LOVE,AND HARMONY.

When Avant first hit the music industry with ''I Wanna Know'' I was taken by his soothing, melodic tone. After a couple of years he released the single ''Separated'' which has R&B music fans all over bopping their heads saying ''mmm, mmm, mmm.'' My Thoughts is a great debut album that is full of beautiful heartfelt songs like ''My First Love'' co-written by CeCe Winans, ''Get Away'' and ''Ooh Ahh'' which despite the name is not a remake of Boyz II Men's hit. This album is a definite must have if you like smooth R&B mixed with a little street talk and pragmatism.
