Overview

This is my personal story regarding symptoms, diagnosis and treatment for autoimmune hypothyroidism caused by Hashimoto's thyroiditis, Chronic Fatigue Syndrome, Adrenal Fatigue and other metabolic-related conditions that I developed co-morbid to thyroid disease.

I also share testimony in regard to my symptom struggles including the emotional aspects and difficulty in finding a doctor experienced in treating thyroid disease with related conditions. I also include a chapter regarding my reason for becoming a Thyroid Patient Advocate and the growing importance for public education on thyroid diseases.

It is my hope that my story will inspire other patients to become proactive in obtaining quality care for their health disorders and to partner with their doctors to achieve this. I also hope this e-book will seve to inspire patients with difficult cases of thyroid disease, to achieve coping skills and a better quality-of-life.

Jim, Just read your book today – loved it. We live parallel lives I think!

I spent the last four years knowing I had Hashi, but I vastly undereducated on the disease. I assumed my Sythroid was my treatment and as long as I took that little pill each day, my thyroid issues were behind me.

Meanwhile I was experiencing everything from weight gain (on a healthy diet) to neuropathic pain (and of course hoarseness, shortness of breath, granulomas, vibration sensation, Raynau

Meet the Author

In 2003 I was diagnosed with hypothyroidism; "Hashimoto's thyroiditis" being the cause. This autoimmune form of thyroid disease that causes destruction of the thyroid gland resulted in my also developing "Chronic Fatigue Syndrome", due to a compromised immune system with severe co-morbid "Adrenal Fatigue".

I also suffered severe anxiety symptoms, including panic attacks early into the onset of Hashimoto's thyroiditis (Hashitoxicosis). A common heart murmur I was diagnosed with in my teens called "Mitral Valve Prolapse", also worsened in severity of symptoms, with the development of these other health disorders.

My eventual receiving of diagnoses was a difficult process with proper diagnostic testing not being ordered by the first doctors I sought treatment from. These types of issues were inspiration for me to become proactive in my own health care and to self-educate myself on these health disorders, which I have done extensively since 2003. I now enjoy sharing this information with other patients experiencing my same health disorders.

I formerly served as editor and forum moderator of Thyroid Health for a major multi-topic content site and as a general health writer for another, where I received Editor's Choice Awards for my articles on health subjects.

    Great story and insightful information

An excellent source of information and inspiration to be proactive in our own diagnosis and treatment. Jim went through the usual scenario of being misdiagnosed and changing doctors until he found the one who was willing to take him a partner in his own care and listened to him. The one size fits all treatment is not working, it needs to be tailored individually as it happened in Jim's case. Jim's story is a real inspiration for people who suffer with any kind of disease not only thyroid and related problems. He took the initiative to educate himself and used his knowledge to find the best possible treatment for his condition including the right medication, nutrition and supplements. I am an advocate of integrated therapy which means that we use modern diagnostic methods and medications in combination with healing foods, herbal medicine and vitamins that are tailored to the individual's condition and needs. Jim's observation about EBV and autoimmune thyroid disease connection was laughed at ten years ago, but so were many other scientists who discovered connections such as stomach ulcer and the presence of bacteria in the stomach by German scientists in 1875. Their theory was proven by Dr Warren and Dr Marshall in Australia in 1982 that H. Pylori causes ulcers, but it took another fifteen years or so to be accepted.
