School Library Journal - School Library Journalea. vol: illus. by author. unpaged. Crowell. 1986. spiral $2.95. PreS-K Four game books that are beautifully illustrated with Carle's vibrant collages but which do not work. In each, divided pages show two pictures ( . . . Food), partial pictures ( . . . Heads and Tails), or a picture and a word ( . . . Sounds, . . . Tools). By flipping the half pages, children can make matches. Some incorrect matches are silly and might be fun, but most incorrect choices are not particularly amusing, and there is no way for children to tell from the books if a match is correct. In fact, sometimes no choice seems correct. In . . . Food, the most appropriate choice for a lion seems to be a roasted joint of meat. . . . Heads and Tails rarely matches a head with a tail; instead, half pages show animal parts such as a snail's and a turtle's body and shell, a rabbit and its ears, and a camel and its hump. Both . . . Sounds and . . . Tools, which pair pictures with labels, may work as word recognition activities if the adult who is sharing the book points out the printed word when children make the sound associated with an animal or identify the toolbut why make lap-time reading into so much work?
