Editorial Reviews

Children's Literature - Uma Krishnaswami
Wright has collected twenty-two nursery rhymes within these colorful pages, from New Zealand, China, Australia, Norway, Ireland, Tonga, Jamaica, Japan, Zimbabwe, Fiji, Indonesia, Denmark, Iran, Germany, Samoa, Switzerland, Russia, Brazil, France, Holland, Iceland, and India. As Michael Rosen points out in his memorable introduction to the book, each piece is small in scale, and together they hail from a vast diversity of spoken-word traditions around the world. The translations fall with grace on the page, each a small snapshot of a place and people. Each poem is accessible, conveying a particular sensory experience even to those who do not know the original language. The Jamaican rhyme "Tingalay-O!" has a catchy singsong feel, while the Tongan tooth rhyme snaps amusingly shut, and the Brazilian piece is mournful in its elegance. Moriuchi's richly textured collages catch the rhythm of each piece as well, so that the whale in "Tohora Nui/Big Whale" from New Zealand sweeps in a clean and perfect arc through water in rippling shades of blue and green, while one can practically see the flick of the donkey's delicate tail in the poem from Ireland. Translations are provided where necessary, and some of the poems, although not all, are rendered as well in the script of the original language. Credits and acknowledgments are detailed in a full spread in back matter. Reviewer: Uma Krishnaswami

PreS-Gr 2—A sunny cover invites readers into this collection of nursery rhymes from around the world. Selections from 22 countries presented in both English and the original language are included as well as the original script/alphabet when appropriate. While a credits/acknowledgments page provides excellent sources, the name of the original language is not always given. The rhymes are well chosen and range from funny and bouncy to quiet and thoughtful. The brightly colored collage illustrations complement them well, although sometimes the backgrounds make the text difficult to read. Michael Rosen's introduction provides interesting information for adults sharing nursery rhymes with children. Overall, this fun volume will add some new verses to traditional nursery-rhyme fare.—Julie Roach, Cambridge Public Library, MA
Kirkus Reviews
With the assistance of librarians, educators and other specialists, Wright has collected 22 poems and songs from around the world. Some are nursery rhymes, others are short literary poems and a few are game-songs. All are presented in English and the original language, where appropriate. The Chinese, Japanese, Farsi (Iran) and Russian rhymes appear in their original alphabets/scripts and in transliterations—a very nice touch. (An Indian rhyme, "Bathtime," appears only in English and its original in Roman letters, and its language is not named in the otherwise excellent credits and acknowledgements section.) The rhymes read very well in English, although one translation, of the French "What is My Hand Doing?", omits a line about spanking in the English version. A few are internationally known, like "Tingalay-O" from Jamaica, but for the most part this is a fresh crop of rhymes to share with children. There is a table of contents but no index, but this is primarily a lap and browsing book, not an academic resource. The whimsical paint-and-collage pictures are just as engaging as the rhymes.
