Editorial Reviews

Publishers Weekly - Publisher's Weekly
Sally is a hound who quits running with the pack when she realizes that the end result is the cornering of a small, helpless fox. By using her energy and natural leadership abilities, she learns instead to lead the hunters on a merry chasein the opposite direction of the hunted creature. There is a place for this book on modern shelves, if chosen by parents who wish to bring home this lesson for their kids. But even without the message, the writing is clumsy and the dialogue stilted as it attempts to invoke British accents for the English setting. Maeno's watercolors provide relief from the sentimentalism of the story; her delicate strokes reveal a botanist's sensibility for details in the flora of the countryside. No ages given. (September)
School Library Journal
Gr 2-6 In an informational, bordering on propagandistic, book, the authors take on the issue of fox hunting to teach about leadership. After Sally, a foxhound, meets a fox, she decides that she can provide the same exhilaration of the chase by leading the pack in an erratic path while leaving the fox to its own business. The text is too lengthy and dense to work well in a picture book. Maeno presents as much flora and fauna typical of the English countryside as each page can bear; the result is a page cluttered with elegant, if distracting, herbage. Neither authors nor illustrator deal with the translation of an essentially English story for an American audience, most of whom would have much less knowledge, perhaps even interest, in fox hunting. Animal rights advocates will like this book; for Anglophiles, the pictures will provide a lush reminiscence of the countryside. For American children in general, the story won't have much interest, and the pictures, while ample in realistic watercolor, will hold attention for only a few pages. Ruth K. MacDonald, Perdue University Calumet, Hammond, Ind.
