All Music Guide - Dave Donnelly
The reasons for Tarja Turunen's forced departure from Finnish power metal giants Nightwish remain unclear. The singer was unceremoniously dumped via an open letter, posted online, citing changes in her personality and business interests. Since then both parties have been surprisingly evasive about the subject, and many were hoping that Turunen would shed some light on the subject through her music. My Winter Storm, Tarja's first album of original material since the split, sees the singer lyrically defiant, but unwilling to deviate too much from the operatic metal style of her former posse. Now recording simply as Tarja, My Winter Storm topped the Finnish charts ...

Now recording simply as Tarja, My Winter Storm topped the Finnish charts immediately upon its release, driven by the Mozart-inspired lead single "I Walk Alone." Overall, the album is softer and more reflective than her previous work, which tends to be the case when lead singers leave niche bands to pursue solo stardom, but the record is hampered by the compromise between her old and new styles. Clearly, Tarja wishes to branch out musically. She achieves this splendidly with "Oasis," a haunting symphonic opera track in her native tongue, the only composition credited solely to the singer. However, barring a couple of notable exceptions, including the single "Die Alive" and the thrashy "Ciarán's Well," the heavy metal aspect of My Winter Storm seems more of an afterthought than an integral element. They're straightforward pop rock songs with ill-fitting thrash riffs as a token gesture to fans, and as a result Tarja the singer never really gives herself a chance to shine. Amazing Voice, Crappy songs

Tarja may have an amazing voice but the crappiness of the songs and lyrics kills it. A few songs like 'Die Alive', 'Damned and Divine', 'Oasis' 'Ciaran's Well' and 'I Walk Alone' are alright, but the rest are lame and pointless. They sound so whiny and it feels as though she's just dragging it on, in an effort to fill the cd. The song arrangement seemed awkward, as though she didn't know which songs to put first and it was all random and sloppy. As much as I love Tarja, this album just didn't cut it.

Very sad, especially since Nightwish's album went platinum four times in Finland, gaining much more recognition than her's. I suggest that she stop fussing over her outfits or what color her microphones are and start working on picking decent songs.

    A reviewer

The first time I listened to it I wasn't wild about it, but I recently went back and listened again and she's fantastic! It is one of the most fantastic all around albums I've ever owned. Tarja's voice is absolutly magnificent! Every song on the album is great but I especially liked, &quot Ciaran's Walls&quot , that song showcased true vocal talant like no other. I also enjoyed, &quot I Walk Alone&quot , &quot Poison&quot , &quot My Little Phoenix&quot , &quot Sing For me&quot , and &quot The Reign&quot . As I said before, stunning album. If this is what we get from her breaking with Nighwish then I'm all for it. Both parties seem to be doing great. Nightwish's new album is great and Tarja's &quot My Winter Storm&quot is just fantastic!
