Editorial Reviews

Children's Literature - Kearsley Briggs
Jim Henson productions asked children from around the world what their one wish would be to make the world a better place. Fifty of their answers accompanied by 40 illustrations reveal what is in the hearts and minds of the world's children. While not always grammatically correct, the messages are strong. They urge peace, love, friendship, sharing, hope, and a true concern for environment. A portion of the proceeds will go to UNICEF.
School Library Journal
PreS-Gr 6Produced by Jim Henson Publishing and the United Nations, with a forword by Nelson Mandela and an introduction by Boutros Boutros-Ghali, this book presents in words and pictures the wishes children around the world hold for our collective future. Unfortunately, there are several weaknesses in the execution. Insufficient information is given concerning how the selections were chosen. The text is presented entirely in English, giving the impression that children the world over express themselves primarily in this language. Also, no credit for translating the text is given. Some of the quotes include grammatical errors. For example, South Korean twins write, ``We believe if one is kind to others, wars might be disappeared in the world.'' Is this what the children wrote, is it the translation from the Korean, or is it an editing error? The illustrations are the true strength of this book. The images are original and well executed in crayon, tempera, watercolor, and colored pencil. Unfortunately, credits for the artwork are given on the last page via a list of names and page numbers, but the book is not paginated, so connecting the artist with the work can be quite difficult. This theme could be the center of an exercise on multicultural issues and common understanding, but the book itself is likely to have only limited use in classrooms or libraries.Melissa Gross, Beverly Hills Public Library, CA
