Children's Literature
A bright, appealing first book of general information for young children on everything from how our bodies work, to the world of nature and commerce around us, to the solar system. A heavy emphasis on animals is appropriate for the age of the readers. Such a book can run the risk of being almost too superficial, such as the religion section that mentions just five of the world's religions with only a fact or two about each. Still, the information presented is enough to give youngsters an exposure to their world and perhaps whet their appetite for more knowledge. There are very simple experiments and project ideas, from the artistic to the scientific, to make this book more hands-on rather than simply an encyclopedia. The illustrations are detailed, clear, colorful, and interesting. This is a book that would work well in a home, classroom, or school library to pique children's interest in a variety of topics. 2005, Kingfisher/Houghton Mifflin, Ages 4 to 8.
