Overview

Sex. That’s the main event, whether you’re reading this book or just living life. It’s the one subject that fascinates us all.

You will find titillating erotic subject matter, what I call smut, laced throughout this book. You’ll meet moms, regular gals and guys who work in porn, but who don’t have anything to do with it outside their day job. Of course, you’ll also get a good look at some of the big-breasted to small-breasted Divas and the porn cyberspace they now inhabit. There is also the episode of what happens when a burgeoning porn company throws a big, high profile charity event starring a bunch of exhibitionist strippers. Besides all the characters involved in producing or performing in porn, there are also the voyeurs on which the site revolved. I had access to lots and lots of men from all over the world, and what they shared with me about sex and relationships is also included. But the episode surrounding a playground pictorial featuring a big-breasted adult actress/stripper, which just happened to be the event that sent me scrambling for the exit, is the most unfathomable.

There are larger issues that are important, too. Like the entrepreneurial females that exist in abundance in Internet porn, the issues surrounding female emancipation and pornography, as well as what constitutes appropriate erotic content and what doesn’t, which is a tremendously urgent topic when it comes to Internet pornography.

The Internet invites us all to become covert peepers, seducing us with the carnal carnival that is breeding online. It’s a vast, ever expanding arena. Peddling porn online is not unlike working with a very large beast, and it didn’t take me long to learn that to satisfy the brute and its paying customers you had to become enslaved.

Read an Excerpt

If you’ve never been involved with an Internet site, or even if you have, let me tell you that there are some very important elements to making your site a success with regard to content that you might want to consider. These elements transfer, I believe, to non-adult sites as well. To list just a few imperatives: You must have daily updates, as well as weekly ones, leaving monthly updates for sections that are more thoughtful in nature. You must also have pages that load fairly quickly, are user friendly and easy to navigate, as well as being pleasant to look at. The interconnectivity of your site is also crucial, so make certain that the visiting surfer can easily move around your site from one section to another. Protecting your material is a constant job, especially if you have sexy pictorial content. Thieves are everywhere on the Internet, and ISPs, Internet Service Providers, can only do so much. An ISP provides access to the Internet for people or corporations through a series of connections made possible by modems, which convert data to transmittable forms. A telephone company can perform like an ISP. But if the thief stealing your online material is located outside the country of origin of your ISP there isn’t much that can be done. American ISPs have no jurisdiction over a website whose ISP is located in another country.

It is also very beneficial if you have a human quotient; an identifiable personality tied to your site. One thing that I learned from Danni Ashe is that it is also extremely helpful, especially if you’re a woman like me who’s writing thoughtful articles about relationships and sex, politics and feminism, to have interesting, even provocative pictures of yourself spread across your Web pages. They don’t have to be nudes, of course, but great looking shots of a good-looking woman make surfers more likely to access, and more importantly, read your articles. The Internet is not unlike the print world in this regard. It is also my feeling that women appreciate seeing shots of attractive men online as well.

The minute I began my job at DHD I started getting emails from men asking me, “When are we going to see more of Taylor?” My section on the site, The Editor’s Desk, showed only a head shot. I would respond to emails on a daily basis stating that I was strictly “all talk” and that a layout was not in the cards for me, also thanking them for their curiosity and compliments. I got emails from young guys, single guys, married men to older gentlemen and guys in the armed services. There was absolutely no specific criteria for the men with whom I corresponded.

Flirting and corresponding online with all the guys was quite a thrill for me. I’m as much a voyeur as most men, but having major responsibility for an adult smut site was something I’d never experienced. My presence brought out some interesting comments, questions and stories from the guys. A recurring question was, “Do women really enjoy sex as much as men?” I would continually reply that they absolutely do, depending on the woman involved. I hadn’t known what to expect from the guys, but they were great and almost always respectful. They were also very welcoming, for the most part, and incredibly open about their feelings regarding sex and women.

One of the very first emails I received had to do with a column I’d written about latex condoms. The guy writing felt adamantly that condoms change a man’s ability to feel pleasure and make it impossible to fully enjoy sex. Some men have difficulty staying erect wearing a condom. This guy’s solution was to let time pass between relationships, then once he’d found a new girlfriend, they’d agree to get AIDS tests before venturing forward. He eventually opted for a vasectomy and monogamy so he could enjoy the freedom of unlimited intimacy, without the latex baggage, as he referred to it. Many men lamented their displeasure about condoms. Unfortunately, in the multiple partner, serial monogamy reality we all live in we haven’t many other choices, unless we decide to really commit to one another, but even then our modern longevity becomes a formidable challenge to life-long partnering.

My Year in Smut: The Internet Escapades inside Danni's Hard Drive

Author, speaker, sex advocate - thought provoking, candid and funny - Taylor Marsh is a delightfully outspoken personality. Taylor is a woman who believes with a little bit of honesty and humor we can all get what we want and have a great time sharing. She has a sexy, candid, compelling writing style. 'My Year in Smut' is a lively and insightful romp through the outrageous and lucrative world of sex and the Internet. A must for anyone interested in how technology impacts our world. I see Taylor as a female role model for the new millennium. Ardice Faoro, Creator and Producer of 'Sexually Speaking,' hosted by Nina Hartley and Dr. Nygel (On 97.1 KLSX - All talk radio for Los Angeles.)

My Year in Smut: The Internet Escapades inside Danni's Hard Drive

'My Year in Smut' is an alchemy of the sleazy with the feminist and the results are pure political gold! Leave it to feminist sex activist Taylor Marsh to point out that, 'The Divas of Porn finally have the freedom and opportunity to independently expand their erotic creativity in an industry that has purely patriarchal roots and a misogynist history. Unfortunately, many of these women haven't learned to rid themselves of their victim roles, habits and relationships, voluntarily submitting to lives that drag them from the unlimited potential of the present back into a second class subservient past.' 'MY YEAR IN SMUT' is an emancipation proclamation! Ariana Manov, Producer & Host of KPFK's 'Feminist Magazine' (Part of the Pacifica Radio broadcasting network.)
