First Chapter

Chapter One: January

Happy New Year! Make your first resolution a resolution to have fun. Celebrate with these ideas for cool ways to make the most of your January days!

Top Five Things to Do When There's Nothing to Do in January

1 . Learn how to ice-skate backward!

2. Rent out your snowman-making services to your neighbors.

3. Set up a hot-chocolate stand.

4. Put a cup of water outside and see how long it takes to freeze.

5. Try something new for the new year %151; a new sport, a new look, a new way to write your name %151; anything!

Have a Ball! (A Snowball Sundae, That Is!)

I scream, you scream, we all scream for ice cream! Here's a cool dessert idea that will have you and your friends screaming for more! Snowball sundaes are easy to make and even easier to eat!

You will need:

To make a Snowball Sundae:

1. Put each topping in a separate bowl.

2. Scoop out one ball of ice cream with the ice cream scoop.

3. Drop the ice cream ball onto a topping and roll it with a spoon until the ball is covered. Hint: You can roll your ice cream ball in more than one topping.

4. Use the spoon to lift the ice cream snowball and place it in a muffin cup.

5. Eat!

Smitten by Mittens

Freezing fingers are definitely not cool %151; they're just plain cold! Don't let the winter weather get a grip on your hands. Keep them covered with mittens made hot by your creative designs.

You will need:

To decorate mittens:

1. Place one mitten on a piece of cardboard (thumb side down), and trace around it to make a pattern.

2. Cut out the pattern. Make three or four patterns of the mitten so you can try out different designs.

3. Now think about the decorating materials you have, and decide where you want them to go on your mittens.

4. Use the colored markers to draw where you want to place your decorations.

5. Repeat steps 2 and 3, using the other cardboard patterns you made. Select the design you like best, and follow it on the real mitten.

6. Before you start decorating, take two cardboard patterns that you're not using, and place one inside each mitten. That way the glue will not leak through to the other side.

7. Place the mittens next to each other on your work surface with the thumbs down. The tops of your mittens should be facing up. That's where most of your decorations will go.

8. If you are using fabric paints, do your painting first. Allow the paint to dry before adding other materials. Follow the design on your pattern and place the rest of your decorating materials on the mittens.

9. Sew or glue sequins, beads, or buttons in place. Glue feathers or bows in place.

10. Let the glue dry for one day. Then remove the cardboard and put on your mittens. Be sure to wave at everyone you see. After all, half the fun is showing them off!
