Overview

Many recordings of Gregorian chant are performed by monks. That kind of authenticity is valuable, certainly, but the music takes on a whole new meaning when it's performed by a professional choir. Chanticleer's beautifully blended and richly rounded sound gives these endless streams of melody an almost sensual quality. And why shouldn't this music be spiritually ardent and aurally alluring? Listened to out of its religious context, chant can be appreciated for its musical qualities: the gentle undulation of the melodies and the serenity with which they unfold. This is soothing stuff, but of course it's much more than that, too. Attentive listening will reveal the genius of the anonymous composers who carved such magnificent music out of a single line.
