Children's Literature - Marilyn Courtot
When I was growing up, I heard the stories of the Bermuda Triangle and used to worry about sailing into it. After all there have been ships and planes that disappeared in that area. The author recaps some of the most famous stories such as the group of five Navy bombers that disappeared (Flight 19). To this day there is no explanation of how these planes could vanish without a trace. In 1918 one of the Navy's ships disappeared and disaster stuck again 23 years later. Walker offers plausible explanations such as possible wartime activity or sudden storms, which she indicates can be quite violent in this part of the Atlantic. The eeriest may be the finding of ghost ships—ships that are floating, but have no crew. Disaster may have again struck with all hands abandoning ship, but the vessel somehow manages to stay afloat. Other explanations, such as UFOs and alien activity, are posited but given the amount of ship and plane traffic in these areas the number of strange happenings is actually quite small. There are definitions of various words along the bottom of each page and they are reprised in the glossary. The last page contains an index and a list of further readings. Part of the "Unsolved!" series. Reviewer: Marilyn Courtot
