Editorial Reviews

Children's Literature - Marilyn Courtot
Several centuries ago, the sea was the great unknown. Sailors told stories of huge creatures from the sea, in one case about a great monster that used its huge tentacles to pull two sailors to their death in the water. What creature could be that strong and big? We now know that there are indeed giant squid of this size. Among the most famous of these water monsters is the Loch Ness Monster. Sightings go back at least 1,400 years. Scientific searches have not brought any large animals to light. Sea monsters have even been mentioned in the Bible and monsters inhabiting various lakes around the world are fairly common—Champ in Lake Champlain and Ogopogo in Lake Okanagan are two examples. Some of the supposed photographs of these monsters have turned out to be faked. One possible explanation is that these are creatures left over from a prior age that were considered extinct. There are definitions of various words along the bottom of each page and they are reprised in the glossary. The last page contains an index and a list of further readings. Part of the "Unsolved!" series. Reviewer: Marilyn Courtot
