Editorial Reviews

Children's Literature - Myrna Dee Marler
This book is for all the Huck Finns and Tom Sawyers who still exist in the world today and they are legion. Its text explores the magical mystery of writing in secret codes, a story beginning in ancient Greece, continuing through the Middle Ages, moving on to the American Revolutionary War and World II, and through modern warfare. It explains exactly how some codes developed and how to read (or decrypt) a great many codes still in use today. It even explains in some detail how to use codes. Written in a lively fashion, the book is clear and should be of interest to anyone interested in keeping secrets from the all seeing eyes of parents, teachers and/or enemies at large. The illustrations are interesting and occur frequently enough that a young reader will be entertained rather than daunted by a thick tome. The book, even though about codes, is really a history lesson about how wars and other affairs of state have been turned by ciphers that the enemy could not break. Reviewer: Myrna Dee Marler
