Luther Butler was born of Southern parents in Alamosa, Colorado in 1929. He holds degrees from Eastern New Mexico University, Southern Baptist Theological Seminary, and Tarleton State University. He served in the US Navy and has ranched, worked in a mental hospital, and in inner city slums, and was with the Texas Department of Agriculture for 23 years. He has two published novels, Preacher and Red Heifer. He is married to Jo Butler and has one son.

In 1985, I took a course on Folklore taught by Dr. Sue McGinity at Tarleton State University. One of my projects was to interview people who had been involved in the moonshining business at Glen Rose, Texas in the roaring '20s. The story of the Glen Rose resident who shot the Texas Ranger kept being mentioned. From this folklore, I came up with The Mysterious Valley. Glen Rose is now a tourist Mecca, so if you come to Texas, be sure to visit this beautiful city in the Texas hills.
