Overview

Angela Gheorghiu turns to the sacred music of her native Romania to begin Mysterium: Sacred Arias, and unsurprisingly, her singing rings with heartfelt sentiment. Supported by the lush sound of the Romanian National Chamber Choir, conducted by Ion Marin (who also ably assumes the helm of the London Philharmonic here), the tasteful settings of Romanian religious songs establish a sincerely reverential mood for the recording. Gheorghiu couples pure tone with judicious interpretative restraint in these songs, and her performance is happily devoid of the vocal mannerisms that one too often hears when opera divas dip into less theatrical repertory. With welcome results, these traits carry over into her performances of Christmas chestnuts such as "Adeste, fideles" and Adolphe Adam's "O Holy Night," both of which shed their typical bombast here. She finds just the right tender dignity for the "Quia respexit" from Bach's Magnificat. And her unfussy readings of Schubert's "Ave Maria," Mendelssohn's "Auf Flügeln des Gesanges," and Brahms's "Wiegenlied" testify to the communicative force of her lyric voice. When opera singers venture into sacred and Christmas repertory, the results can be questionable. Lucky for us, Gheorghiu excels where others disappoint.
