School Library Journal - School Library Journal
Gr 5-7 Fresh from her wintertime adventures in Mystery at Snowshoe Mountain Lodge (Dial, 1987), Kate goes to spend part of her summer vacation with her friend Bonnie at the oceanside home of Bonnie's wealthy grandparents. Soon she is enmeshed in the mysterious goings-on of the household. Pieces of jewelry belonging to Kate and other house guests disappear. Expensive china figurines are stolen, the hired help behaves oddly, and Bonnie's twin cousins look like the guilty parties. Then suspicion falls on Bonnie's grandmother, whom Kate decides is a kleptomaniac. Finally it is revealed that old friends of the family who are visiting for the summer are attempting to defraud their insurance company by stealing from themselves. The book is billed as a page-turner, and in fact each chapter ends with a cliff-hanging paragraph. However, minimal character development and the somewhat contrived plot weaken the suspense. Readers may keep turning the pages to find out whodunit, but they won't really be caught up in the action. This is a story for relatively undemanding mystery fans. Unfortunately the cover promises a scarier, more suspenseful story than Eisenberg delivers. Bruce Ann Shook, Mendenhall Middle School, Greensboro, N.C.
