Editorial Reviews

School Library Journal
Gr 2-4-- An amusement park is the setting for this addition to a popular series. After spending time on the various rides, Cam, her Aunt Katie, Uncle George, and friend Eric decide to eat at the snack bar. That's when Aunt Katie notices that her wallet is missing, and the mystery unfolds. With the help of her photographic memory, Cam begins to gather and eliminate clues; before long, the guilty party is rounded up (at the haunted house, of course). The story flows logically and convincingly from problem to solution, with a few twists that add just the right amount of suspense for this audience. Cam is once again portrayed as a strong character, making this another worthy transitional chapter book. The format is open and inviting, and humorous black-and-white drawings appear on every other page. --Cheryl Cufari, N.A. Walbran Elementary School, Oriskany, NY

    a good recommendation

I will give a good recommendation to the Cam Jansen books by David A. Adler. We obtained most of these from the library, but we did find one, Cam Jansen and the Mystery at the Haunted House, at a thrift store or garage sale and then purchased some others ourselves. This is one of a whole series of "Cam Jansen" mystery books about a girl named Jennifer Jansen, nicknamed "Cam" because she has a photographic memory like a camera, and her friend Eric Shelton, both ten years old, who solve mysteries.
These are pretty much purely pleasure reading, but I think that mysteries are especially good because they can help the reader to develop thinking skills. The Cam Jansen books are for ages 7-10, but when I did a few of them as read alouds even I found the stories interesting. While I believe that there is a place for purely recreational reading, it seems to me that even books used for this purpose should have some substance to them, rather than being completely inane and insipid. We found the Cam Jansen books to have been worth the time and effort spent reading them.

    A Cam Jansen Book Review

'Cam Jansen and The Mystery at the Haunted House' by David A. Adler is a book about a girl named Cam who is smart. She is a ten year old who has a photographic memory. This book is about how Aunt Katie's wallet gets stolen while she is inside the haunted house. Cam uses her memory to help figure out how her aunt's wallet got stolen. Would you like to know how???? Read the book to find out. I think this book was okay. My eyes popped out of my head when the old lady got hit by the roller skate. I never expected that to happen.
