Meet the Author

I write fiction for teens and adults and teach writing and literature at the University of Texas at San Antonio, where I live with my husband, three kids, two dogs, and two rats (Katniss and Prim, of course). I'm also an avid reader and book reviewer. I've always said I never want to give up reading for writing or vice versa. I want to do both. My favorite authors are Tracy Chevalier, Ann Patchett, Suzanne Collins, Veronica Roth, Rick Riordan, and Stephanie Meyer. I have too many to name, but those are a handful of them. When I'm not spending time with the family, working, reading, or writing, I can be found watching The Big Bang Theory, Modern Family, The Middle, and NCIS.I love to interact with readers and have recently added features to my website at evapohler.com with this in mind. If you email me your art and/or stories based on The Gatekeeper's Trilogy, or on Greek mythology in general, I will post them on my website for others to enjoy. I have also added a short video on the Olympians and a fun Jeopardy Game to test your knowledge. Please visit my website for more details. Thanks for taking the time to read about me and my writing!

    230 pages

I am so glad I am not the first person to review this 230 page, free novel. I am also glad the other three reviewers left positive reviews, because I did not like this book at all. Sometimes, I even wait awhile to leave a review, just so I will not be the first one. This book was pretty well edited, it was about 96% correct. My thanks to the author. I started out really liking the plot, a married couple, happy kids, a dog, good friends and a mystery. The first few chapters seemed to be unrelated to the rest of the book and I soon grew to intensely dislike Yevette, the heroine, of the story, she is selfish and immature, putting her needs before her husband and family. I could understand, if it was for something important, but not for the reason she did. I also did not like the repeated phrases every few pages. "Liar, creepy and strange, no backbone, hamster wheel and stupid and strange," became so annoying, I found myself grinding my teeth. This book is very unrealistic. Parts were believable, but not many. It is bloody and violent, contains many deaths and murders. There are abductions, rapes, torture, child molestation and abuse, self abuse, lesbians, drug use and lots of vomiting. There is no cursing and the mutual sex is nondescriptive, churches andreligion are mentioned, but there is not any preaching or Bible quotes. The plot becomes extremely convoluted and not in a good way. Chapters seemed to be misplaced and at times to belong in a different book, it became so choppy. Lots of actions are repeated. The conclusion did tie up all the loose threads, but this is done in a horrifying manner, then without consequences, everything turns out all sweetness and light, without any lingering trauma. This book made me uncomfortable and nervous. I am glad others enjoyed it. I felt as if I was stuck in an unending nightmare. This is more suspense than mystery. For adults, ages 18 and older.

I really enjoyed this book. I found that Mona's character was very odd at first, but I enjoyed reading the path that led to her strange qualities. Yvette seems to think poorly of herself at times, but ends up being stronger than she thinks she is. The tale started off a bit slow at first. Once I got further into the story, I was hooked! I ended up staying up until 2am one night because I HAD to find out what happened with the characters. I will definitely be reading the next book in the series, The Mystery Tomb. It looks like it's even better than this one.

This is a different kind of story than what I usually read. I tend to steer towards the romance genre. I am glad that I stepped out of my comfort zone and gave this book a chance.

The Mystery Box by Eva Pohler is a contemporary story with eleme

The Mystery Box by Eva Pohler is a contemporary story with elements of romance, suspense, action, and mystery. The story focuses on Yvette, a wife and mother who is a little bored with her life. One day a box is delivered to her house but it's not for
her. When she delivers the contents to the rightful owner, her neighbor Mona, she becomes entranced with the story Mona tells her.(It's hard to say anything else about the plot without giving too much away and including spoilers.)
This story is very intriguing and really captured my interest. I became immersed in the story and I found myself experiencing the emotions along with Yvette. I had tears in my eyes as I read the last 15-20% of the book because I was so emotionally vested.
The story was well written and flowed smoothly. Although a few of Yvette's memories slowed down the pace. Mona's story was captivating and I kept wanting Yvette to go back over and hear more of the story. There were a few minor grammatical mistakes but they didn't distract too much from the story.
Overall, this was a great read and I'll definitely be reading the next book in the series

    fantastic

Areal eye-opener aswell as an incredible page-turner. Maybe this story hits me because of my own "hamster wheel" analogies, or maybe it is simply the best story I haveread in years. Either way, this avid reader highly suggests you give it a try...at least until the middle. Then you won't be able to put it down.

    Loved it!

I didn't want this book to end. Written so well, it pulls you into the story. Well developed characters you feel a connection to. This book has it all, mystery, intrigue, selflessness, romance and just the right amount of each. Thrilling, highly reccomend.

I, personally, really enjoyed this book. I thought it was well written and I found very few mistakes, which in my experience, are very common and frequent in other free e-books. I liked the contrast between Yvette's boring and monotonous life as a stay-at-home mom versus Mona's story. It really drew me in and kept me craving more. By the end, it reached a point I never expected. I can honestly say I really enjoyed this book. Whenever I was unable to read it I was constantly thinking about it and could hardly wait to get home to it!

I am not a big mystery fan but I love Eva Pohler's writing so I decided to read this too. Wow! I was up until 3 am this morning because I couldn't put this book down! (good thing I was off work today!) Like The Gatekeepers Saga, this book grabbed me and wouldn't let me go! It was exciting from beginning to end! I will recommend this book to anyone no matter what type of book genre they like! It's even free on Amazon so there is no excuse not to try it! Well done Eva Pohler!

    Great

What a wonderful story. A little slow getting into at first, but it really captivates you and you have to keep going to find out what happens to Mona. Keep the tissues handy for the last part though. Ignore the anal retentive grammar nazis. There are no grammar errors here. Just another nazi too intent on grading the book instead of reading it to enjoy it. Highly recommend.

    Compelling read, disturbing story

I found I had to finish the book to see how it ended, but the story line was disturbing to me. The idea of people abducted for the purpose of trying to get them to commit suicide is too dark for my tastes. I was also bothered by all the trailing side stories that came through as the characters would leave the main plot to remember some unrelated time in their life- it made reading confusing at times.
