Editorial Reviews

Children's Literature - Children's Literature
This is the stuff science-fiction movies are made of. Readers of all ages seem fascinated by the existence of holes in our universe. Movies have depicted ships and planes disappearing into the Bermuda Triangle, never to be heard from again. Although writers disagree about the exact location or size of the "triangle," many books have been written about these unexplained disappearances. Now students can read the eyewitness accounts and scientists' attempts to explain the phenomenon. Glossary, index and a list of supplemental reading material are included. This is good material for reluctant readers at the middle school level, and is one of eight titles in the "Can Science Solve?" series. 1999, Reed Educational & Professional Publishing, Ages 10 to 14, $22.79. Gr 4-6-The answer to the series title question is evident by the end of each volume. In the case of Black Holes, the answer is "only in theory." In the Bermuda Triangle, a variety of natural explanations seem to offer the most reasonable solution. In Abominable Snowman, it's "not without a live or dead body of such a creature." These offerings discuss the same theories and anecdotal evidence often found in other books on the subjects and in less detail than some. It is their dynamic format that provides the greatest attraction. Sharp photographs, simple diagrams, whole pages printed on colored backgrounds or sporting whimsical designs like stylized "bigfoot" tracks or ship's anchors, plus captions in colored bubbles, make them as appealing to the eye as their content is to the mind. Although not essential purchases if other recent titles on these subjects are already in the collection, these books are desirable as basic introductions likely to draw in readers daunted by thicker and more staid-looking treatments.-Ann G.
