On the search for an ancient treasure...
On a cruise to the Caribbean, fourteenyearold Cassie Hartt hopes to reconnect with her father, who she hasn't seen since her parents' divorce. But spending time with her new stepmother and stepsister leaves her feeling like an outsider. So she's thrilled when she meets Charles. Not only is he a cute boy her own age, but he's on a mysterious mission.
Charles is headed to Martinique to find an ancient silver statue that may be the cause of a curse on his family. Cassie can't resist a good mystery, so she decides to team up with Charles. But they aren't the only ones looking for the statue -- and the other interested parties will stop at nothing to get their hands on it....

On a cruise to Martinique with her distant father and her new stepfamily, fourteen-year-old Cassie encounters a mystery involving an attractive boy, his family's dark secret, the ghost of an Arawak Indian maiden, and a long-lost jeweled statue of Jesus.

Editorial Reviews

School Library Journal
Gr 5-8-On a cruise with her father, stepmother, and stepsister, Cassie meets Charles, who is on his way to his grandfather's plantation in Martinique, while attending a lecture on gems and superstitions. The young people are intrigued by a ghost story about an Arawak Indian girl who was captured and killed on the island in 1902. The tragedy of her death, coupled with the disappearance of a jeweled statue, sets the two new friends on a mission to solve the mystery when they dock in Martinique. They are soon caught in a web of lies, subterfuge, and deception surrounding the ancient artifact. The teens find the object, expose a secret in Charles's family, and catch the criminals who had been trying to kill them. Portrayed as either self-involved, out of touch with reality, or evil, the adults have little impact on the events that occur or the outcome, and the simplistic characters and contrived situations strike an unbelievable chord. However, the mystery will appeal to fans of the genre and those readers who enjoyed Stengel's Mystery at Kittiwake Bay (Aladdin, 2002).-Susan Geye, Crowley Ninth Grade Campus, TX Copyright 2002 Cahners Business Information.

    Awesome! I love it!

I loved how mysterious the characters could be. At some points, I thought one person was good, and that they would help, but they always turned out bad. That, I think, is a great way to keep the reader reading! It's a great story, and I'd recommend it to anyone who likes a good mystery!
