Editorial Reviews

Children's Literature - Children's Literature
Most reluctant readers can be enticed to read a book about UFOs. These mysteries hold the attention of young middle school readers, especially boys. Although most people think of a UFO as an "alien spaceship," any light or object in the sky that cannot be explained is considered to be a UFO. Many are so small they cannot be seen by the human eye, and are only detectable through radar. Readers will be able to decide for themselves if there is any truth to the stories of alien abductions. Scientific evidence is presented alongside eyewitness accounts of sightings. Words in bold print within the text are explained in the glossary. An index and recommended reading materials are also included. One of eight titles in the "Can Science Solve?" series. 1999, Reed Educational & Professional Publishing, Ages 10 to 14, $22.79. Children's Literature - Lois Rubin Gross
Part of the "Can Science Solve" series, this investigative picture book explores the possibility of extra-terrestrial visitations and debunks the most unlikely of UFO sightings. Most of the explanations are meteorological, but the author also acknowledges the possibilities for close encounters of the first (UFO) and second (physical evidence) kind. A brief, but current bibliography and extensive vocabulary help make this a great investigative tool for future Scullys and Mulders.
