Overview

Gillengaria seethes with unrest. In the south, hostility toward magic and its users has risen to a dangerous level, though King Baryn has ordered that such mystics are to be tolerated. It is whispered that he issued the decree because his new wife used her magic powers to ensnare him…

The King knows there are those in the noble Twelve Houses who could use this growing dissent to overthrow him. So he dispatches the mystic Senneth to assess the threat throughout the realm. Accompanying her is a motley band of magic-users and warriors including Tayse, first among the King’s Riders—who holds a hard view of mystics in general, and Senneth in particular.

But as the unlikely allies venture farther into the south, they will face death in a land under the sway of a fanatical cult that would purge Gillengaria of all magic users. And they will come to realize that their only hope of survival lies in standing together…

Editorial Reviews

From Barnes & Noble
This abundant offering sets the stage for what promises to be a riveting tetralogy by Archangel trilogy author Sharon Shinn. Mystic and Rider features a regal succession crisis, several court conspiracies, shape-shifting heroes, and star-crossed lovers.
Publishers Weekly
While not as original as Shinn's popular Archangel trilogy, this first of four in the Twelve Houses series, set in the land of Gillengaria, is tailor-made for the growing audience of fantasy fans who like a good juicy romance. Elderly King Baryn sits on a shaky throne, wed to a strange childless queen, and hides his only heir, a daughter. To investigate rumors that Gillengaria's southern noble houses are plotting revolt and fostering a pogrom against mystics born with supernatural powers, Baryn sends out five diverse individuals: Senneth, a female mystic who commands fire; Kirra, an aristocratic healer and shape-changer; Kirra's shape-shifting servant, Donnal; and Tayse and Justin, two elite King's Riders deeply distrustful of mystics. After rescuing the boy Cammon (an orphan empath) and a raelynx (a savage cat), the party undergoes increasingly perilous adventures while a disturbing attraction between Senneth and Tayse builds into profound and forbidden love. Shinn's spellbinding characterizations, especially that of the hard-bitten Tayse, who loses his heart to the powerful yet vulnerable Senneth, animate this familiar parade of shifting political alliances and disparate adventurers who gradually bond. Shinn's complicated pantheon of gods fallen mostly into disregard, a plethora of unsolved puzzles and ample promise of her characters' lives "changed by love" in future installments make for a rich beginning. A Feel Good Book Worth Reading Over and Over

A totally enjoyable first book in an adventure/fantasy series. The unusual characters are well developed and have diverse and unusal life experiences and talents. In this book the characters get to know each other and form bonds of friendship and caring that continue throughout the rest of the series. Another favorite of mine is a later book in the series entitled Fortune and Fate that features an interesting and unusual heroine.

    Strong female characters

I really enjoyed Ms. Shinn's Archangel series and thought I'd try this new series. I'm glad I did. As in the Archangel series, the female characters are strong and capable, talented and funny. I was a little annoyed with the beginning of the story when the main character, Senneth has to explain the political structure of the ruling 12 houses to the naive Cammon. Surely, anyone living in the country for most of his life would know more about the structure of it. Once I got past the exposition, however, I enjoyed the plot. The romance between Tayse and Senneth grew very nicely and I liked that I wasn't quite sure if they would get together until the end.

    An instant fan

I picked up Mystic and Rider on an impulse, in search of the next read on my fantasy list. I became an instant fan of Sharon Shinn's work- her writing style is so easy to follow, yet isn't dumbed down in order to be so. The characters in this novel are very captivating, particularly Senneth, the main character. I love what Sharon Shinn did with this story, I was truly aching for more when I finished. I just picked up the next installment, 'Thirteenth House', and I can't wait to sink my teeth into it!

    Not too bad

I wasn't sure what to think about Mystic and Rider when I picked it up. It started off a bit slow and did drag in parts, but overall I enjoyed it. Not the best book I've ever opened, but still a good read.

    New admirerer

I am a big fantasy fan, and on a whim i picked up this book. Half way through the book i fell in love with Sharon Shinn's style of writing. I found this book captivating, danger elegantly combined with reluctant romance. Sharon Shinn is a spectacular author and as an apirering writer i seek to emulate her.

    WOW!

I am completely blown away! This novel was one of the best I have ever read. The world of The 12 Houses was so real and I am in awe of Shinn's ability to create such a vivid and complex reality. The Characters were just awesome. They are also very real and complex. When they react to an event or make a decision it is true to there own unique character. I never doubted for a moment that these were real people with real problems. This was an excellent read for me, especially because I usually enjoy historical fiction. If you like Fantasy or Sharon Shinn, or just like to be entertained you MUST read this book! I finished this book craving more and I hope that this is a new series that she will be working on.

    A fantastic fantasy

King Baryn orders the mystic Senneth to journey through the realm of Gillengaria to find out how the nobles feel about his rule because rumors persist that the aristocracy is unhappy. Accompanying Senneth is Riders( soldiers loyal to the king) Tayse and Justin and Mystics Kira and Donnal. Along the way they pick up Cammon, an indentured servant who isn¿t even aware he¿s a mystic until Senneth shows him how to use his powers......................... The journey is fraught with danger as a cult, the Daughter of the Pale Mother, headed by Conralinda Gisselness has amassed a large following of women who declare that Mystics are evil and must be destroyed. She whips the populace into a frenzy and has her soldiers kill the Mystics wherever they find them. Senneth and company also learn that several heads of the twelve houses are worried about the succession since the king has only a rarely seen daughter. Rumors that his queen is a mystic also upsets the people who think those who wield magic are evil. Civil war on a religious and politic front seems inevitable..................... Sharon Shinn demonstrates her amazing writing talent in MYSTIC AND RIDER the first installment in a great new fantasy series. Senneth risks her life to save a baby from its grandfather who wants it dead because the infant was born with mystical powers. Readers will adore this vulnerable heroine who is one of the strongest mages in the land and is completely devoted to the king. Riding through the realm, the riders and the mystics observe how much the common folks detest those with magic even killing their own children. The world of Gillengaria is so realistically portrayed; readers will be convinced that this world actually exists............................. Harriet Klausner
