'Rush' has been tagged in reviews as 'rock music w/ brains' more times than I can count. This is true, is the sense that their lyrics don't tread the 'norm' as far as topics (i.e.,love,sex,drugs,etc.). Neil Peart is known around the world as a grandmaster in drumming and percussion. However, he also wears the hat of lyric writer in 'Rush'. His lyrics favor topics such as human nature, behaviorism, stories w/ a sci-fi base, and mythology. They can be very vague @ times, and are easily misunderstood. Although past biographies of the band hit on the topic of Peart's lyrics and what's behind them, they never devoted the full amount of analyzation desired by fans and critics alike. Carol and Robert Price have taken 36 of the band's most beloved songs and, with detail and zest, 'break-down' the lyrics and topics in a way in which is both understandable and interesting. So much, that @ the next listen, the songs take on an entire new meaning--one of true appreciation for the flare that Peart has for writing. The book gives 'Rush' fans a glimpse into Peart's mind and thoughts via an understanding of his lyrics, showing us that not only is the man one of the most gifted percussionists alive, but also a deep writer and thinker. The Prices bookend the volume with a 'Rush' chronology and complete discography.
The band is the best and this book really makes this idea true!
