Kirkpatrick and her husband raise cattle and grapes on their ranch at the 27-mile marker of Oregon's John Day River.

Meet the Author

Jane Kirkpatrick is an Oregon author whose work includes the three novels Love to Water My Soul, A Sweetness to the Soul, and Homestead. A Sweetness to the Soul earned the author and publisher the Wrangler Award from the Western Heritage Center as the "Outstanding Western Novel of 1995." Her award-winning essays have appeared in over fifty magazines and newspapers across the country. She is a clinical social worker, speaker, and teacher. Jane and her husband, Jerry, live on a remote ranch in Eastern Oregon. A Gathering of Finches is the third book in her compelling historical novel series.

    Inspiring, Fascinating Book

    As a resident of Florida, this book caught my eye because it is a historical novel about Ivy Stranahan, an actual Floridian, in the early 1900's. The Florida history that unravels in the telling of Ivy's life is thoroughly fascinating. But, to me, the stongest part of the book is the story of Ivy - of her strong beliefs, determination, bravery and perserverance, of all that she accomplish for women's rights, wildlife preservation and protection of the Seminole Indians and of her unwavering love for her family and her husband. This is a story that anyone can read and appreciate. It is a story about the very fabric of life, of what keeps us going and what holds us together; a story that feeds the heart and the mind; a story that teaches, inspires and challenges. This was the first of Jane Kirkpatrick's books I have read and I am impatient to read all the rest. I feel she has opened a new literay path to me and I thank her for that.
