Authors Sara Nieves-Grafals and Al Getz-a husband and wife team of mental health professionals turned travel/cookbook writers-take us on over twenty years of journeys peppered with history, geography, folklore, cross-cultural psychology, foreign languages, architecture, mythology, archaeology, and gastronomy. Seventy-five recipes from their Washington, D.C. home kitchen transport us to different destinations.

Sara Nieves-Grafals, a polyglot clinical psychologist from Puerto Rico, dances flamenco in her spare time. She lectures about mental health issues and has a psychotherapy practice. Al Getz, originally from New Jersey, retired as a public health analyst. He has edited scientific publications, builds cabinets, designs kitchens, and dabbles in photography, classical music and painting. Together they journey through life, traveling, learning, and cooking.

Nieves-Grafals and Getz, retired mental health professionals, here chronicle their vacations with some favorite recipes. Although they try to present themselves as travel and food writers, their inexperience shows. Some of the recipes are representative of foods fed to tourists and not meals eaten by locals; other recipes are lacking integral ingredients in those specific dishes. Their writing is reminiscent of two people attempting to describe their vacation, not well-versed authorities researching specific areas in the world. The authors' passion is not conveyed as it is in such books like Peter Mayle's A Year in Provence; nor is it as entertaining as any of Bill Bryson's books. Not recommended.-Jennifer A.     Delicious!

    Delicious!! The book itself, as well as the, recipes. Sara Nieves and Al Getz enchantingly capture and generously share their gift for living artfully. It does not matter whether the reader has yet to visit, already visited, or just likes to savor travel books. It is a most charming book drawing on the authors¿ talents for keen observation and poetic articulateness. Each chapter is a virtual mini-trip, including one lovely verbal portrait after another. The photography, by Getz, is handsome and artistic. The authors¿ multi-cultural sensibilities, based on personal history and social-psychological professional expertise, make this travel-cook book unusually intelligent and insightful in commentary. At the same time, a wonderful balance of forethought in planning along with openness to adventure and spontaneity is conveyed. Some of us who¿ve already traveled to some of the destinations noted might well be tempted to return, further appreciating the experiences in new light, thanks to Sara and Al. Cooking with their recipes offers vicarious satisfaction of traveling along with them in spirit! This combined travel-cook is clearly unique. A list of friends and family who would delight in the book came quickly to mind as well ¿ yet a further testimony.

    A fresh look at travel and food

    Mystical Places and Marvelous Meals: A Travel Cookbook is a fun read and a unique blend of travel, food, culture and history that whets the appetite for off the beaten path travel and a variety of food adventures. For anyone interested in travel, it provides multiple dimensions to any excursion, offering not just an account of the authors' travels but a way of approaching travel that takes us beyond just the tourist sights. For those of us who love food and cooking, it places culinary delights in the context of history, culture and the people that eat the ethnic dishes described in the book on a daily basis. Just as the sightseeing is often off the beaten path, the recipes are also not always typical or familiar to to us, but are delicious and many are easy eough for a mid-week meal. The Cabbage and Pasta, for example, is great tasting, simple, healthy and can turn a work night dinner into an ethnic eating adventure. The ineresting stories and anecdotes suggest that we visit other places with an open and curious mind that will allow experiencing any trip to the fullest. This is a fun, informative book that is definetly worth reading. A

    Recipies with culture

    Loved it! At last a book that focuses on something other than sight seeing, namely the other memorable aspect of travel ¿ local cuisine. What makes this cookbook unique is that unlike cookbooks specializing in the cuisine of a foreign country, which tend to provide a mere listing of recipes, here the authors weave local recipes into storytelling of local legends. The book implants local culture and folklore into cuisine. Both legends and accompanying recipes are captivating, e.g., Pasta for a Funeral or an Orgy, which is presented in the chapter on Italy. The book has an international flair to it, covering travels and recipes in such countries as France, Portugal, Turkey, Puerto Rico, Bermuda, and Peru. Some recipes are unique and can¿t be found in many cookbooks including mussels with potatoes, Turkish remedy potatoes, pasta with pistachios, and beans with clams. Most recipes are easy to prepare, and the novice cook should have few problems in the kitchen. This book is for the traveler who can¿t be satisfied with only photographs of foreign places as well as for the curious food lover who craves for more than just a recipe.

    great food and great stories all in one place

    Thanks to this adventurous and talented couple for going out and rounding up these great recipes and great travel tales...eveyone that we have given the book as a present has loved it...

    Great Food .. Great Places

    What a wonderful book. Recipes are great and the narratives regarding their travels make me want to quit my job and travel around the world. A must have for anyone serious about cooking and/or travel!
