“Our main object will be to describe one of the most incomparably beautiful myths that has ever flowered from the mind of man, or from the unconscious processes which shape it and which are in some sense more than man.… This is, furthermore, to be a description and not a history of Christian Mythology.… After description, we shall attempt an interpretation of the myth along the general lines of the philosophia perennis, in order to bring out the truly catholic or universal character of the symbols, and to share the delight of discovering a fountain of wisdom in a realm where so many have long ceased to expect anything but a desert of platitudes.” —from the Prologue

I agree with the poster from 2000, indeed the best book on Christianity that I have ever read.
I was a Buddhist most of my life, and I never felt any connection or interest in Christianity until I read this book. Afterwards, I could safely say that I could consider myself a Christian Mystic.
To be clear, this is not an academic book, though it does work as a good source-text for the thought of Christian mystics and church fathers. This is a book that does contain much of Watts' own understanding, but for the most part, explains Christianity from the mystical perspective. To what extent the views expressed in this book are actually prevalent in Catholicism or ritualistic Christianity, such as High Church Anglicanism, I cannot say. In the end, one's own beliefs are one's own. What I can do, however, is wholeheartedly recommend this work. I can also say, having read much of Alan Watts' other work, that he is actually at his "best" when talking or writing about Christianity. Anyone familiar with Watts' other work will not be disappointed by this, and should not let the fact that it is about a western, rather than eastern, religion, turn them off.

This book explains exactly what I think about Christianity! It's a Buddist's understanding of the Christian myth and rituals. A wonderful, wonderful book!!Was this review helpful? Yes NoThank you for your feedback. Report this reviewThank you, this review has been flagged.
