Editorial Reviews

Children's Literature - Amy S. Hansen
With plenty of pictures of the popular TV Mythbusters cast, this book will fly off the shelf. The experiments, standard recipe book questions, are appropriate for early elementary school. The steps for each experiment are clear, and the explanation of “why [the result] happened” is age-appropriate. This is a good and fun book of experiments, with a couple of unusual challenges (e.g., asking if someone who is scared really has measurably colder feet than before being scared). However, as a science fair book, this has a common failing of lacking some basic instructions. Only in the introduction are young scientists asked to consider a hypothesis. It would be easy to miss this step. Also, the experimenters are not always instructed to do multiple trials. While this is a key component of any science fair project, the time listed next to each experiment is for just one trial, and the follow-up instruction is to decide if the myth is “confirmed, plausible or busted.” Other projects in the book are not really experiments at all, but rather very cool demonstrations (e.g., making banana bread with mealworms). This is a fun book that includes some good investigations into science, but it is not a science fair book. Book two in the “Science Fair Book” series. Reviewer: Amy S. Hansen AGERANGE: Ages 8 to 12.
