Na Mele Welo: Songs of Our Heritageby Mary Kawena Pukui
Na Mele Welo presents a selection of more than 80 traditional Hawaiian mele (songs and chants) collected and recorded in the 1920s by Helen H. Roberts, and preserved in the Roberts Mele Collection of the Bishop Museum. Each mele is presented in its original Hawaiian-language text, with English translation an annotation by Mary Kawena Pukui. Her faithful translations evoke the beauty and poetry of these Hawaiian compositions and help to transport the reader to the time and place when these mele were first chanted or sung.
