Stark Look at the Female Body

The naked female body is one of the most pervasive subjects in the history of art. Based on the archeological evidence one could actually argue that it is perhaps the oldest art subject. It has been explored over the millennia in various forms, and in the age of photography has assumed a new and distinct direction. Sylvie Blum's "Naked Beauty" is the latest addition to that art form and it's destined to become a classic.

The images in this book, although in black and white, have a very modern look to them. The stark, minimalist setup of these photographs reduces the female body to its bare essentials. And yet, Sylvie Blum is very innovative and creative with the kinds of photographs that she takes. The nudes are photographed almost exclusively in a studio, without any props aside from an occasional use of a stool. The poses that the models assume are contorted in every sense of the word. They help elevate their subject almost to the level of abstract art. The women are studiously devoid of sexual charge and seductive power. Although the models are exceptionally feminine, this lack of overt eroticism makes them feel almost androgynous. Perhaps this distance from the erotic connotations of the naked female body helps us appreciate it more in its purest essence.

The photographs in this collection are equally noteworthy for their photographic excellence as for their artistic merit. They are a study in creative and deliberate use of lighting and perspective for the purpose of accentuating the subject. Even though they are static (vary few photographs are in motion) they project a certain form of dynamism that jumps at you from every page. The book is beautifully designed, the photographs are large and well arranged, and the hard cover adds to the overall artistic merit. This is an exceptional coffee-table book that would also serve as a great source of ideas for art and photography students. I highly recommend it.
