Vic does a great job making the reader feel as if he was right there, experiencing the adventures. I could hear the twigs cracking under my feet while walking along the paths of Isle Royale as I was reading. My heart was in my throat more than once, and if I didn't know for sure that the author and his buddy Ken are still alive, I would have been very worried about them during the title story of the book.

You'll experience a full range of emotions during while reading these true stories--loving the adventure every step of the way.

I like wilderness and adventure stories, so I've read a lot, and this one is great. Clear, concise prose - lush descriptions of the island, lake and its wildlife. There's humor, sorrow, and even suspense. The author just nails it. It's also a fairly thin volume - good to tuck in your backpack.

    A must read!

I was browsing through B&N when I came across this title. I have been to Isle Royale once and it was the most memorable trip of my life. I bought the book because I'm planning to go again and thought I might glean some pointers. I never expected it to be one of the most enjoyable reads I've picked up in a very long time. The back cover states this is his first book...could have fooled me. He writes with clear description, thorough knowledge, humor and great insight. This book is exceptional!

    Captivating!

The cover draws you in, the illustrations are enchanting, and then you begin the journey and that's where you are completely held captive. Great read! Each story draws you in. The beautiful island of Isle Royale is depicted wonderfully by the author. I laughed out loud, turned pages in anticipation, and lived the journey with the author. This is a book that men and women alike will thoroughly enjoy. Isle Royale National Park is a place that not too many people know about. This collection of stories truly dishes it up in such a way that you want to find this Shangri-La, take your own journey, and experience the wilderness and majesty of this beautiful park. Hopefully, the author will put pen to paper again.....real soon.
