Editorial Reviews

Children's Literature - Carrie Hane Hung
Crawling in tunnels in northeast Africa are the naked mole-rats. These pale, wrinkled-skin rodents with prominent, long front teeth are the subject of one of the four books in the "Weird Animals" series. Read and learn about how these beady-eyed, nearly blind animals survive in their burrows. There are several color photographs that are close-up shots of the naked mole-rat; one picture with a few captions features the predominant physical characteristics of this creature. The text provides a springboard for classroom discussion about how the physical features of the naked mole-rat are adapted for living in its habitat. Young researchers may need support with the content vocabulary and informational text features, which include a table of contents, glossary and index. Also provided in the back of the text are a few additional books and the Internet site for further information; some of the listed resources are about animals in the same family as the naked mole-rats.
