Overview

Boasting stunning, never before seen photographs and an NFL Network DVD, NAMATH is an autobiography befitting its author: brash, brazen and winning.

A rebellious and gutsy gunslinger out of Western Pennsylvania's Beaver Valley, Joe Namath redefined the meaning of underdog. After winning a NCAA National Championship for Paul "Bear" Bryant's Alabama Crimson Tide, he embarked on a professional football career unlike any before or since.

Known on and off the field for his astronomical contract, fur coats, Fu Manchu mustache and playboy lifestyle, "Broadway Joe" was one of the most gifted and cagey quarterbacks ever. The only quarterback to throw for over 4,000 yards in a 14-game season, he did it all with battered knees and unsurpassed charisma. While his Super Bowl III guarantee would make him a pop culture icon, it was Namath's battle-tested grit and courage that took him into the Hall of Fame.

    Namath

NAMATH, by Joe Namath......I must admit I had no idea what to expect when I bought this book...was it an autobiography, was it just about FOOTBALL, was it going to be another boring tale of the little pigskin and why it's so great...but most of all, being a bit of a novice, would I be able to understand all those little 'terms' men use when talking 'bout that little oval pig? I had read the Archie Manning/Peyton Manning book, just finished one of Terry Bradshaw's books on 'The Game'...then I learned of Joe's book. So being what I had called myself for years a 'Joe Namath' fan...not a Jet's fan, or even a football fan, just simply a JOE NAMATH fan, I decided I had to at least try to read this book. I was absolutely amazed, like I said, I had no idea what to expect...I only knew the Joe Namath that everyone else saw in print and on the big screen. I opened the first page and was captured! Yes, it is a book about football, and yes it is a book about Joe Namth's life...but the way Joe blends it all together...no one but Joe, himself could make it work. Like the magic he had on the football field, his magic and charisma captures even the most novice of readers(me) in the first few pages of this book. By page 17, I was hooked, especially when I ran across a true Namath-ism...otherworldliness. I won't blow it here and tell you the meaning...Joe does it much better than I ever could...but I had to laugh and will keep that word in my vocabulary from this day forward. Bet most of you thought Joe was from Alabama...I did, until the book! I was truly impressed by the fact that Joe took the time to explain many facts that just a fan would not have ever known...where did the AFL come from, how is/was it different from the NFL, are there any of the 'original' teams left today....answers to questions I never knew I wanted answered...until I started reading Joe's book. He pulled it all together, made it flow together so that even a 'GIRL/WOMAN' could not only read and follow, but totally understand. There were a few spots when some abbreviations were used(I'm sure most men know what a WR is), but I had to ask. After all I'm not totally dumb, I knew it was a position, just wasn't sure what position! And being a 'GIRL/WOMAN' who watches football and knows that 'backfield in motion' is a legit call on the football field, not some guy just trying to get fresh, I can honestly recmmend this book to all my other 'girl/women' friends as an easily understood, very interesting book, not just on football...but about a man who enjoyed his work, made mistakes and wasn't afraid to admit them on or off the field. It is a book that once I started reading...I couldn't put down!

    Broadway Joe unleashed.

Joe Namath is an icon in professional football. His story had to be a good one.
    The book did not disappoint.
