Editorial Reviews

Children's Literature
As Shakespeare wrote in Romeo and Juliet, "What's in a name? that which we call a rose by any other name would smell as sweet" (II, ii, 43). But would you still be able to sell it at a flower show? The mystery of names and their power to promote or diminish is explored across history, cultures, and languages. Names can affect the success of companies, the social acceptance of pets, and the successful adjustment (or not) of children. Chapters are interspersed with short explorations of specific aspects of the name game, called "Name Nibbles" and feature, for example, "Celebrity Baby Names" and "Screen Personas." Dictionary entries for the language of names appear at intervals at the bottom of the page, set apart by white type on a black background. Expressive line drawings are used stand-alone or in cartoons to illustrate topics under discussion. After the last chapter, a list of interesting facts titled "Did You Know?" is presented, followed by a list of relevant books, DVDs, and web sites, "Explore More!," "There is a Name for It," a list of sources, and an index. This book would be a useful resource for a middle-school or high-school library or class on cultural linguistics or sociology. Reviewer: Hazel Buys
School Library Journal
Gr 4–8—All kinds of entertaining and random facts are found in this quirky book. Tips for naming pets and companies are given, in a chapter each, along with hints for remembering people's names, explanations of conventions in other countries, and the system of choosing hurricane monikers. Sports, people, and geographic locations all have different sections. Black-and-white cartoons add a bit of humor. Students will navigate this book with ease.—Rachel Artley, Watertown Elementary School, TN
Kirkus Reviews
This informative picture book about onomastics reveals how names are chosen, from celebrity baby names to pets' names to names for cars, companies and hurricanes. It investigates the connection between people's names and the jobs they end up pursuing. Is it just a coincidence that David M. Bird studies birds and that Les Plack is a dentist? What are we to make of the chiropractor Dr. Robert Bonebrake? Also provided are discussions of cultural naming practices and tips for remembering the names of new acquaintances. The prose is informal and entertaining, and Stearn's comic illustrations and numerous insets keep the text visually interesting. While the subject matter is unlikely to be a first investigative choice with the set this is aimed at, those interested in what we name things and why will be pleased to encounter this well-researched and engagingly presented book.
