    Nancy Drew Rocks!!!!!!

I read these books as a young teenager adn LOVED them, I am not 70 years old, I am only 31 adn I am going to purchase these books for my children. People who do not like these books are too cought up with the now and lack imagination. You feel as though you are nancy or one of her close friends as you follow her through her mysteries and hunt for clues to solve fascinating Mysteries. Great books for stirring up the imagination, and classics until the end.

My sister and I would read these Nancy Drew books together in bed after our lights were supposed to be out. One night we heard Mother coming up the stairs so we quickly hid the lamp under the covers while we continued to read -- we almost caught the bedsheet on fire, but that didn't keep us from reading in secret.
I'm past 80 but just got some ebooks on my NOOK - would like to have the first 6-volumn starter set set for my NOOK as well - if the publisher will ever permit it (rather than trying to get each one individually).

Nancy Drew Starter Set: The Secret of the Old Clock/The Hidden Staircase/The Bungalow Mystery/The Mystery at Lilac Inn/The Secret of Shadow Ranch/The Secret of the Red Gate Farm

This is an excellent starter set of Nancy Drew mysteries, so if you are interested in reading mysteries about a young lady who always seems to get involved in life around her, read these. Be warned though, the Nancy Drew stories were written a long time ago, (1930s), so a lot of the dialog and settings are dated, and may seem awkward to you. Nancy is a wholesome character and her mysteries usually have harmless explanations. She always stands up for good, and is frequently faced with helping the innocent find justice. Some more contemporary mysteries for kids you may enjoy are listed below.

Nancy Drew Starter Set: The Secret of the Old Clock/The Hidden Staircase/The Bungalow Mystery/The Mystery at Lilac Inn/The Secret of Shadow Ranch/The Secret of the Red Gate Farm

The first point I think you need to be aware of id that the publication date of 1996 listed by Barnes and Noble is not entirely correct. These stories were written in the 1930s. That said, the Nancy Drew character is a classic one for young mystery fans, and I recommend any reader serious about this genre become familiar with her work. Be warned though, the settings, social interactions, etc are dated. I found myself cringeing to the thought of young girls dressing up for dinner (even out on a ranch), and flirting with the cowboys.

    A Series for the Curious

The Nancy Drew series shines as one of my grade school favorites. Gleaned from an earlier point in history, the setting provides an aura shrouded in mystery. The main character, Nancy, shows a pioneering spirit, a strong sense of independence, and intelligence with a subtly dry wit. She's a good kid with a penchance for the sheer curiosity of a burgeoning mystery. The friendships and the strong family relationships that she shares draw the reader to the next book in the series. Plus, the adventures are exciting!

There are two versions of these stories!

About 1959 these stories were edited and re-published and some of the language was edited out or removed. Recently Applewood Books has re-released the old Nancy Drew and Hardy Boys mysteries with the original language. In the new versions Nancy was increased in age from 16 to 18 because it was not thought to be a good idea to have a 16 year-old girl riding around River Heights in her own blue roadster. The original versions refer to black people as Negro or colored and the role of women and minorities is very different from what it is now. In 'The Secret of the Old Clock' there is one black person who is the only one in the whole book who talks in slang such as 'Sho' 'nuff Miss Nancy.' Everyone else in the book is white and is portrayed as talking in correctly spelled English. However I enjoy the original versions more than the cleaned up ones and it gives me a picture of what life was like before World War II in my mother's and father's time. Look for these versions in the Original Nancy Drew series from Applewood Books.

The stories in Nancy Drew are timeless. I read my first Nancy Drew book in 4th grade, they are a great quick read and very entertaining. I am now sharing them with my sisters step-children. Nancy Drew stories showcase a lead female detective who is beautiful, smart, morally sound, and polite.

    Old Stuff Repackaged

I cannot understand how Nancy Drew continues to rank so high in sells for young adult mystery fiction. These books were not published in 1996 as the publisher wouyld have you believe. Nancy Drew was written in the 1930s. The dialog, crimes, clues, everything is pre-world war two stuff. not very close to modern times. Boring. There is so much more out there to choose from. Find something else.
