Editorial Reviews

Children's Literature - Della A. Yannuzzi
This 32-page biography tells the story of Nancy Pelosi's rise to Madam Speaker of the House of Representatives. In 2007, Pelosi was sworn in as the first female Speaker of the house. It is a powerful position. If the president and vice president died in office, Pelosi would become president. As Speaker of the House, Pelosi selects Democrats to head important House committees. She also meets with the president and other officials as well as with foreign leaders. In addition to being Madam Speaker, Pelosi is also a mother of five children and grandmother of seven. For many years she stayed home to raise her children, but Pelosi had always been interested in politics. She supported the Democratic Party and helped to raise funds. In 1987, she ran for a seat in the House of Representatives. In 2001, she became Democratic whip. A whip's job is to make sure members vote the way party leaders want them to. Author Horn has done a nice job of presenting the story of a strong woman and role model who said upon becoming Speaker of the House, "For our daughters and our granddaughters, now the sky is the limit. Anything is possible for them." A timeline, glossary, further reading and source notes are included. Black and white and color photographs illustrate the text. Part of the "People We Should Know" series. Reviewer: Della A. Yannuzzi
