Editorial Reviews

School Library Journal
Gr 2-4-The three best friends from Hest's Pajama Party (Morrow, 1992)- Casey, Jenny, and Kate-are back. Jenny's Mom is exhausted from caring for her new baby, and Kate thinks that the three pals can reduce the stress in Jenny's house by helping out-for a small fee. Hest's story is a realistic portrayal of the ups and downs of friendship and family life, and the challenges of caring for a six-month-old child. The only aspect of the book that doesn't ring true is how innocent the characters seem to be about conception. The girls are so embarrassed by Jenny's book on the subject that they hide it in a brown bag high up on a shelf. Nevertheless, Nannies for Hire, with its occasional, realistic full-color illustrations, will be popular with newly independent readers.-Gale W. Sherman, Pocatello Public Library, ID

Jenny, Casey, and Kate, who tested their friendship in "Pajama Party" (1992), test it once again in this sprightly, funny chapter book. When Jenny Marks' new sister, Daisy Lisa, is born, the three friends are totally enchanted. It doesn't take long, however, for the baby to turn the Marks' house upside down. When Jenny complains to her friends that she's being ignored in all the to-do, the trio decides that giving Mrs. Marks a baby break might help the situation. With Kate assigned to food, Casey to entertainment, and Jenny to diapers, the girls become nannies for hire. Unfortunately, Daisy has no intention of cooperating. Larding the story with humor and the stuff of real life (Daisy is a perfect monster; Mrs. Marks' mouth falls open when she sleeps; and diapers are totally yucky), Hest adds her own stamp to a familiar scenario. Trivas' colorful illustrations, at least one per double-page spread, are nicely informal. The girls are perhaps less well defined in the pictures than they are in the text (Casey wears a baseball cap but otherwise is a ringer for Kate), but the wit and wonderful energy of the story still shine through.
