From the Publisher

“Author Emma Thompson delights listeners with spot-on observations about family relationships and working friendships. As performer, she presents an exuberant and enthusiastic accounting of each character she has created...Only the most jaded listener will be able to refrain from laughing out loud.” —AudioFile magazine, Earphones Award Winner

“All the magic of the movie version illuminates every page, but what is a special gift, is hearing Thompson put the book-on-tape narration world on notice...Having an Oscar-winning writer in Emma Thompson doesn't hurt things when it comes to putting movie words into the page-turning form of a book. Hearing those words come to life through Thompason's acting proficiency is a match made in heaven.” —

“Thompson's intimate narrative feels as though she's letting you in on the joke… This good, old fashioned moral yarn is a delightful listen.” —School Library Journal

“…not to be missed is Emma Thompson reading her own Nanny McPhee Returns. In addition to the wit and warmth that comes through in the reading of the story, the recording includes the film diary Thompson wrote, which alternates with chapters of the book.” —LMC Library Media Connection

VOYA - Betsy Fraser
The Green family lives a contented life on Deep Valley Farm. Mr. and Mrs. Green love each other as much as they love their children. The five Greens work together on the farm, living a far different life than their cousins, who are as posh as they are spoiled. Mrs. Green, who eloped with her husband and was cut off from her sister and the rest of her family because of it, has never regretted her decision. The Greens' lives change irrevocably the day Mr. Green is sent to war, and just when Mrs. Green thinks it couldn't get any worse, her sister's horribly spoiled children turn up, as well as continuing money threats, and no word from Mr. Green. It will take the magical Nanny McPhee to deal with the havoc in the Green's household. This book differs from an ordinary novelization and will appeal to a wider audience. Emma Thompson alternates chapters of the story with a diary that explains to readers what it is like to be on-set during filming. This gives readers some really interesting information about the filming process, the actors and technicians who work on sets, and what they do, as well as some insight into the author herself. Readers who aren't interested have the option to skip ahead to the story, but more than likely, this behind-the-scenes glimpse will keep readers hooked. Reviewer: Betsy Fraser
Children's Literature - Michael Jung PhD.
Waiting for the production staff to set up the next shot of the Nanny McPhee Returns movie is very tedious for actress/screenwriter Emma Thompson, who has been keeping a diary of all the delays, pranks, and accidents that seem to occur every day. So Thompson decides to occupy her time by creating a novelization of her Nanny McPhee Returns screenplay, which she fits in between sections of her diary. The result is an entertaining double-story, for as readers listen to Thompson tell the tale of how Nanny McPhee helps three naughty children get along with their spoiled cousins and save their farm from a good-for-nothing uncle, they frequently get thrown back into Thompson's film diary to hear her relate a behind-the-scenes story of what it's really like to wear the hot and sweaty Nanny McPhee costume, how bad weather always spoils an expensive outdoor shoot, and how nearby soundstages can cause unexpected meetings between the casts of Nanny McPhee Returns and Clash of the Titans. The stories get off to a slow start, but quickly pick up from the second CD on as tension in both tales increase. Listeners should know that since movies are shot out of sequence (often causing a movie's final scenes to be filmed on the first day of a film shoot) some of the scenes Thompson describes filming happen in her diary before they occur in her novelization, which can spoil some plot points. Nevertheless, the story shines from Thompson's fantastic character voices, as she gleefully embodies an enormous cast, including Nanny McPhee, the children, a hilarious ARP Warden, and an unusual pair of hit women. Thompson's charming (and often nonsensical) narration is also a high point, as she constantly breaks the fourth wall to ask the reader questions or even muse about what she'll make for dinner. The audio book ends with a bonus question-and-answer session where Thompson responds to fan mail questions, reinforcing the sense of camaraderie she develops with her listeners. Overall a unique audio book that is especially fun to listen to before or after watching the Nanny McPhee Returns movie (also released as Nanny McPhee and the Big Bang). Reviewer: Michael Jung, PhD

What an absolute delight! NANNY MCPHEE RETURNS was a very entertaining story for the entire family to listen to! I've not seen either movie or read any books associated with Nanny McPhee, but that didn't hinder me from enjoying this tale. Read by the author and well-known actress Emma Thompson, the listener is transported to the English countryside. The story introduces the listeners to the Green family. Their mother was born to a wealthy family, but after she falls in love with a poor farmer, she is disowned. That suits her fine, and the family is happy and content. But then Mr. Green has to serve in the military, and the mom and three children are left to run the farm until his return. Mrs. Green's sister dumps her two children at the farm to protect them from the war, and the five children are at odds from the beginning. Mrs. Green is desperate for money and can't handle all five children, and is worried they will lose the farm. It is at this point that Nanny McPhee enters the picture to save the day. Throw in the magical presence of Nanny McPhee, an unscrupulous brother-in-law trying to convince Mrs. Green to sell the farm, and adorable little piglets, and you get the enchanting story that is NANNY MCPHEE RETURNS. The audio book recounts both the story as well as includes a verbal diary by Ms. Thompson of the filming of the movie. The diary entries are as funny, if not sometimes more so, than the actual story being told. A discretionary note here, though. Though the story itself is suitable for all ages, especially as the main characters are young children, there may be a few objectionable words in the diary. Nothing vulgar, but a few swear words, and a reference to a woman's upper body parts. The usage is quite amusing, but some parents may find it unsuitable.
