Benjamin Taylor knows his town and its renowned bay. Among other things, it's a monument to horrific disasters, both natural(remember Vesuvius)and man-made, which he acquaints us with in his splendid cultural history-cum-travel book "Naples Declared." If you want tips on four star hotels, where to dine, and not-to-be-missed classy boutiques, you'll have to try a conventional Baedeker. But Taylor offers a wonderful start for the uninitiated traveler to southern Italy. Intelligent, brightly penned, and packed with ideas of places to visit, his book packs much valuable information in less than 200 pages.
