Editorial Reviews

From Barnes & Noble
It's a rainy night, and granny is snoring on her bed. A sleepy boy plops on top of her, then a dog crawls up and dozes off on top of him. Next, a cat leaps up and settles for a snooze, and a teeny mouse jumps to the tippy top of the slumbering pile. All sleep happily, until a wakeful flea bites the mouse...ouch!!! Wood uses gradual changes in color and perspective, and her gleeful cumulative tale ends in sunshine and play.
Publishers Weekly
A picture-book favorite returns as an oversize board book just right for lap reading: The Napping House by Audrey Wood, illus. by Don Wood. The misty blue artwork that chronicles the "dreaming child," "snoring granny" and a number of additional snoozers seems to bleed off the pages with their rounded corners, until that "wakeful flea" disrupts the sleepers and the sunny colors signal the end of naptime. Copyright 2005 Reed Business Information.
From The Critics
For its twenty-fifth birthday, the Woods' now classic book has had a makeover with very positive results. Let us start with the inviting new cover. The frame around the cover illustration is now gone. The cat and the mouse have joined granny, the child, and the dog on this "bed in a napping house, where everyone is sleeping." The block text has been replaced with one that suggests freedom of movement and is much more indicative of what is to come inside. A new typeface has been used for the text of the story, as well. Richer colors give greater definition to the objects in the bedroom. The blues have a deeper tone that reflects the grey, rainy day. As the reader turns the pages, she will more easily notice the subtle changes in the light in the room as the rain begins to dissipate until finally the sun comes out in all its glory. A CD accompanies this newly reprinted book. On it is a reading of the story which has specific musical notes for each of the creatures on the bed. There are six original songs about rain and rainy weather, and the story has been set to music as well. The tunes and songs have a soft, dreamlike quality—just right for a napping house. Preschool and kindergarten teachers will discover many ways to use these as extensions of the book. Reviewer: Sharon Salluzzo

Good for a young reader's home library

This book can be used in ways besides just reading aloud - it can be used for math lessons as well! The illustrations are a little dark and creepy, in my opinion, but well done and provide a little humor as the characters all pile into the bed for a nap, one on top of the other.

    Most wonderful predictable book

I just love this book. The beautiful pictures and predictable story are perfect for little people learning to read and enjoy books. My nephews were given this book by me and my child now has it as well. Wonderful, simple book to add to your home library.

    Beautiful Book!

The Napping House continues to be everyone's favorite in our house! With it's rhyming paragraphs, little children can learn the words, quickly. Encouraging them to love reading by 'reading' this book to you. Along with the reading, you can spend time finding where all the little creatures have moved in the room before it is even time for them to jump on Granny's bed! The illustrations can't be beat! They are as beautiful as a fine piece of art! This will be a family favorite!! Add this book to your family's library today!

Highly recommend this book, A Must Have for any child

My daughter bought this book for her neice when she was born. It has been her all time favorite book. She's five now and enjoys it as much as she did the first time she heard it. Have bought a copy of this book for everyone I know who had been pregnant since. They have all said how much they enjoy this book too.

    An exciting read

I found this to be a delightful tale giving examples of mood and action. The story is exciting and the illustrations are right on target. The style of the writing (the rhyme scheme used) and illustrations (watercolors) renders the book adorable by any reader of any age.

    Great Story

This is a wonderful book with beautiful illustrations. My 1st graders love reading this story and discovering who will be joining the pile of napping people/animals on the bed next. Audrey Wood's fantastic story telling skills are put to good use in this book. I highly recommend it and all others written by her. This book will keep you and your children coming back for more time and time again.

    A Fun and Funny Read

It is a fun story and fun to read. My 2 year old granddaughter absolutely LOVES it! I love reading it to her, using special inflections that help to make the story even more interesting and fun to listen to; waiting to see what happens on the next page. Great Book! Highly Recommended!

The headline gave the basic idea of what the story was about, but didn't tell the reader everything. That was good! It created interest.

This was a great book for teaching children sequencing/order. It would be interesting for them not just the first time they read it, but to retell it later while trying to put the characters in logical order.

    Family Favorite

This book was one of my daughter's favorites when she was a littler girl. We read it over and over again. Now, my daughter is grown up and having a baby of her own so I am buying "The Napping House" for my new grandbaby. I pray that my daughter and her first born baby will enjoy the same special bonding time with this book as she and I had many, many years ago.
