Editorial Reviews

Children's Literature - Judy Crowder
Narwhals, once thought to be unicorns that could come galloping out of the sea, have fascinated folk for centuries. This book, part of the "Whales and Dolphins Up Close" series, give young readers a good, basic introduction to these ocean mammals. Interestingly, no one really knows what their tusks, which can grow as long as nine feet or up to half their body length, are for. Fighting? A male feature (females do not have them)? The book includes facts on narwhal feeding behavior, reproduction, habitat—cold arctic seas—and how they avoid prey. Especially interesting is that these whales are colored dark on top and lighter on their bellies, the better to hide themselves from ocean predators swimming deep under the sea. The book includes a life cycle chart, some information on how human action affects them, plus an index, glossary, and lists of books and internet sites. The book's lively format contains color photo illustrations. Reviewer: Judy Crowder
