NASA's Aeronautics Research Mission Directorate (ARMD) works to solve the challenges that still exist in our nation's air transportation system: air traffic congestion, safety and environmental impacts.
Solutions to these problems require innovative technical concepts, and dedicated research and development. NASA's ARMD pursues the development of new flight operation concepts, and new tools and technologies that can transition smoothly to industry to become products.
NASA aeronautics' research programs conduct fundamental, cutting-edge research into new aircraft technologies, as well as systems-level research into the integration of new operations concepts and technologies into the Next Generation Air Transportation System (NextGen). NASA has already made decades of contributions to aviation. They continue to develop solutions to benefit the flying public every day.
With world-class federal, industry and academic partners, they are creating the Next Generation Air Transportation System, or NextGen. Our work will help find solutions for increasing the capacity, efficiency and flexibility of our national air space, and to help address substantial noise, emissions, efficiency, performance, and safety challenges.
The program seeks to provide increasing capabilities to predict and prevent safety issues, to monitor for safety issues in-flight and lessen their impact should they occur, to analyze and design safety issues out of complex system behaviors, and to constantly analyze designs and operational data for potential hazards. These technologies can be leveraged to support safety in other complex systems such as NASA long-duration missions in space science and exploration.
These advanced capabilities—in the form of innovative concepts, tools, technologies and knowledge—will enable revolutionary design solutions for the performance and environmental challenges of future flight vehicles. The Fixed Wing Project explores and develops technologies and concepts for improved energy efficiency and environmental compatibility of fixed wing, subsonic transports.
This book contains a look at the variety of future aircraft concepts being explored. Each concept is fully illustrated in color.
