Editorial Reviews

Children's Literature
In this adventure Nate finds himself bodyguard to an owl. Cousin Olivia insists her owl Hoot needs Nate and his faithful dog Sludge to guard him on his trip to the owl doctor on the train (Hoot doesn't like to fly) because she's received a note suggesting her neighborhood might be more pleasant sans Hoot. Problems arise when Nate awakes from an impromptu nap on the train to find Hoot's cage empty. With a missing owl and several suspicious neighbors on board Nate has not one but two mysteries to solve. Weston's illustrations are well placed and entertaining, with a clue tucked in here and there. Nate the Great aficionados will be well pleased with his latest case. 2003, Delacorte Press, Ages 6 to 10.

K-Gr 3-The Sharmat team keeps its series fresh in this 24th case for the young detective. Here, theatrical cousin Olivia fears for the safety of her pet owl and enlists Nate and his dog to escort Hoot on a train from San Francisco to Los Angeles. With plenty of suspects, comical plot twists, and a satisfying resolution, the authors carry on their tradition of interesting, but peacefully concluded mysteries. In her fourth turn at illustrating the Nate books, Weston ably mimics original illustrator Marc Simont's style, occasionally showing her own flair, as in a full-page portrait of the owl. A strong addition to a popular series.-Gay Lynn Van Vleck, Henrico County Library, Glen Allen, VA Copyright 2004 Reed Business Information.
