Editorial Reviews

Children's Literature
This slight biography of Nathan Hale is designed to look like a graphic novel, and indeed it may draw in readers reluctant to read their history in other forms. More sophisticated readers or researchers, though, may find this brief treatment of Hale's life somewhat lacking. Divided into four chapters denoting Hale's early education, his service in the Continental Army, his failed spy mission, and his legacy as a war hero, the biography rarely delves beyond the surface story. The combination of the comic book format with historical context means that much information is relayed via dialogue balloons, but that dialogue is often stilted or phony because it is meant solely to convey facts. The comic illustrations themselves are drawn boldly with some emotion but without much detail. Their colors and full-page layout, though, make the design feel dynamic. A very brief glossary, bibliography, and index are included. This title is one of the "Graphic Biographies" series. 2006, Capstone, Ages 8 to 12.
