Editorial Reviews

Children's Literature - Mandy Cruz
Nathan the hippo, the largest animal high up in the hills, wants to be a lifeguard. The local pond that was usually overcrowded during the summer is far too small for a big animal like Nathan. The other animals try to spare Nathan's feelings by encouraging him to wait until next year to be the lifeguard, but next year never came and a hyena blurted out that he was just too big to be the lifeguard. Nathan is sad and dejected until he hears a tiger cub splashing in the pond. Nathan quickly jumps in and saves the cub. Before Nathan knows it the pond is surrounded by all of the other animals and is completely empty. Nathan's huge splash displaced all of the water. Poor Nathan is once again feeling sorry for himself, thinking he ruined summer for everyone. Two penguins happen to be playing on the hill below the pond and notice all of the pond's water had trickled down to form a lagoon below. Excitedly they tell all of the other animals who shout out that Nathan has saved summer. This cute story reminds readers that sometimes good intentions do not always have the outcome we hope for but if we act from the heart, things will often turn out for the best. Reviewer: Mandy Cruz

PreS-Gr 3—Nathan, a large hippopotamus, dreams of being a lifeguard. Every summer, animals from all around gather at a small pond for their vacations. He proves to them that he has the necessary skills, but they discourage him, saying that he is just too large for the job. When he mistakenly "rescues" a tiger cub and inadvertently causes the pond to go dry, the animals disperse in disgust. They ultimately find a lagoon downstream and hail Nathan as the hero for saving the summer. This resolution makes very little sense and leaves readers feeling as empty as the pond. The Spanish translation is well done and stays true to the English version. The watercolor illustrations are detailed, colorful, and add to the sense of place, but the story ultimately doesn't hold water.—Roberto Zapata, San Antonio Public Library, TX
